I’ll give you that point. But' date=' when he was behind the plate, Beckett and Lester pitched better. He needs to return to the Sox as a coach, not a player. Salty needs to learn from him not be replaced by him. He is old and it is time to move on.[/quote']

I like that.

I could see that as a loose possibility. Even if he came back as like a so called "special advisor", maybe that could help change some of the negative attitudes in the club house. Hell at this point I wouldn't even mind if they brought back Wakefield for that role. However I really dont think its Valentines fault as much as it is the players.

The biggest problem in two of the sports....Baseball and Basketball because of guaranteed contracts. No wonder football went past both like they were standing still. That is not the only reason but it is clearly one of the big differences.

The owners have never been to bright and from day 1 have fought a losing battle because Marvin Miller made them look like the dummies they were and to some extent still are in the very first union negotiation.

They have never really recovered from that first negotiation and from the court battles that have occurred since. Each CBA negotiation that has occurred has never been an effort to deal with the central issues. Worse than that, the owners in another wave of stupidity have negotiated thinking that THEY would negotiate a position that provided that they the owners themselves would be the safety valve saving them from outrageous player contracts and that has never worked out. They have never been able to save themselves from each other and have only served to make their situations worse, virtually playing into the hands of the players union each and every time.

The owners are so inept that they invariably fall into collusion schemes and end up in even more trouble.

The NFL is the only pro sport sensibly run. The keys are a hard salary cap and non-guaranteed contracts. That keeps a lid on salaries and prevents the NY teams from dominating because of local cable TV advantages. LA isn't a factor in the NFL-yet. No teams there. In the other sports, LA is on the same footing as NY. In the NBA, most of the big free agents want to go to NY or LA, because they know that's where the media is--and the endorsement money. In MLB, the LA teams have been on a speeding spree this season, buying up salary dumps. The Mets will be next once they get rid of their financially distressed owner.

The owners in sports put up with all the crap because of the TV money. That keeps increasing and appreciates the value of their franchises.

Yea but there are not that many of them with really really good TV deals and Football is clearly healthier by a wide margin. Undoubtedly guaranteed contracts are an albatross around baseball's neck. Why do you think Uncle Bud was compelled to try this nutty WC format? There simply are not that many healthy franchises. Ya the economy has not been great but it has not slowed football a tick.

I actually think the owners have always come out of these negotiations thinking they have negotiated a position that would allow themselves to be the controlling safety valve that would keep player personnel salaries from spiraling out of control and they have never exercised that sort of self control. Honestly the Players Association negotiating with the owners group representatives have been men against boys. It is so bad that the owners come out of them invariably wearing the cheshire cat grins when in fact they have been the canaries every single time!

Why is this such a popular sentiment in Boston? Have we ever considered that Varitek, the ass wipe with the big fat C on his jersey, DID NOTHING TO STOP THE CHILDISH BEHAVIOR LAST SEPTEMBER, something a CAPTAIN should have the responsibility and leadership to do?

This guy is the most overrated stooge in Red Sox history and there have been some doozies.

f*** Varitek. There. I said it. He's a pushover. The last moment he lead that team in the heat of the moment to turn s*** around for the good was on July 24, 2004. Then he went soft after the World Series..."I'm never gonna do that again...I'm a weak bastard..."
