Yes' date=' but your missing the point. He is a 24 year old rookie and he is the [b']5th guy in the rotation[/b]. You can't expect more then what he has given us this year.

So you are not disagreeing that he has been mediocre BECAUSE he is a rookie?

Don't much care where he is in the rotation.

No, I’m saying your expectations are too high for a 5th slot rookie starter. He’s had great games and that just goes out the window for you because he is laying an egg. What pitcher on this staff hasn’t done that this year? I’d go as far as say he’s been our second or third best pitcher this year.

He is NOT the second or third best pitcher on our staff. Check the statistics. Based on ERA he has the 10th best ERA on our staff out of the 18 pitchers who have pitched for the team this year coming into this game. Its worse now. And our overall pitching has sucked-12th in the AL of 14 teams. So he is a mediocre pitcher, an average pitcher, on a poor pitching team. Where does that put him, exactly?

V may have to pull him pretty quickly tonight. When a guy's pitches have nothing to the degree that Felix's pitches have nothing tonight it is usually not an issue of settling down. He just does not appear to have it tonight.

You can shut up now.

Josh Beckett ERA: 4.14 ERA

Lester ERA: 4.48 ERA

Felix ERA: 4.59

Clay ERA: 5.53 ERA

Dice-K ERA: 6.06

with young guys' date=' you deal with it. He has dynamite stuff, but a veteran and an ace learns how to pitch when the stuff isnt there. He isnt there yet, obviously[/quote']

Nope. Not there at all.

Good to see that Valentine sees what we are seeing and has the pen active while the game is still winnable. Hopefully he will move quickly to get rid of Doubront.

I agree. :D

That was just stupid. Johnson swings and misses a ton of Encarnacion isnt exactly fast. Plus, you're doing it vs a lefty, so the jump sucks. That was just an awful decision there from Farrell

I don't think V can afford to go much farther with Felix tonight if he really wants to win this game. I suppose if he gets lucky enough to get outs he can stay with him a bit longer. If one guy gets on though I think he will have to pull him. A 7-2 game is right around the corner if somebody gets on.

Why would I care about the bullpen. He isn't in the bullpen.

Staff=the entire staff

Starting staff=starting pitchers only

Fact is, even if you compare him to starting pitchers, he is still mediocre. Coming into this game, for AL pitchers throwing at least 60 innings, Doubront ranked 32nd of the 58 pitchers. Thats IS mediocre, no matter which team he plays for. If you compare him to our s***** starting pitchers to try to make him look good, he is STILL mediocre-third best ERA of our 5 pitchers. Neither good nor bad. Mediocre.

pumpsie, he's a guy you deal with because of the upside. He's been mediocre with good peripherals. Which means that as he learns the league more and refines his pitches, he will settle down into a good pitcher

He could become good, I agree.

However, if you are dealing with the here and now, he is decidedly mediocre-with the potential to be better. I am not buying any arguements that he is better than mediocre right now.

I didn't say starter or rotation once in my posts.

He isnt. He is decidedly mediocre. I think people are willing to overlook his horrendous outings when you have some really solid flashes of dominance at times. I think he could be a Lester-lite.
