Hes a proven closer?

Weird, I must have missed something.

He's proven himself in high leverage situations while pitching in the AL East.

Would you really rather have a guy like Heath Bell who was a product of Petco Park and NL West lineups but has recorded a few saves instead of Bard??

When he give us at least 30+ SVs, I'll call him proven closer, until then... He is an interesting promise.

Id rather have just paid the guy in my sig and kept Bard in the 8th. Those 2 turn baseball games into 7 inning games. That way, Bailey and Melancon never happen......but we dont need to go down that road.

Yikes. That would have taken our payroll for LT purposes over 200mm. They're trying to get under $189mm by 2014. Signing a closer to that deal is not cohesive to their plans.

His contract status was status quo for 3-4 years. They could have signed him well before this offseason.

he deserved it more than any of their other disaster moves.

.......and I always have this argument with one of my Sox buddies, since when were we too cash strapped to avoid a luxury tax penalty? They spent 170 million on a soccer team this offseason.......why was a penalty a deciding factor in offseason spending?

He left his balls in san diego.

True that. i cannot recollect agony giving us a timely hit all last year. He hit the ball in the first 1-6 innings. and then never got a hit that got us in the lead. I know he had a couple against baltimore but orioles don't count

Well you can't just say "He deserved it more than some of our other mistakes, so we should have signed him"

Those other mistake signings are the signings that prohibited us from signing Papelbon. I'd absolutely rather have Lackey than Papelbon, but we have Lackey, so they couldn't spend the money on Papelbon.

By no means am I defending some of the signings that this team has made, but at the same time you have to realize that the mistake signings are the signings that prohibited the Papelbon signing.

Well this could go a couple ways now......they lose another heartbreaker late at the hands of the bullpen and deflate even further, or they pull out a good win, feel warm and fuzzy, and gain some momentum. What's it gonna be?

GOGOGO!!!

Charge that issue to Theo.

There were opportunities to " dump " lackey in the off-season... Would of had to eat some salary, but it would of went a long way to resigning pap

You're trying to tell me that there were teams who were going to take on 1/3 of a pitchers salary who just had TJ Surgery??

There was a zero percent chance that this team dealt Lackey this year. None.
