Paddilla been told he is no longer in the run, same with Miller.

I guess it comes down to Doubront and Aceves.

Bard at this point seems very unlikely to start.

I want Aceves to be a starter for the Bosox. I just have a feeling he would do well, and only get better in that role. Obviously that could be argued to no end.

With Bobby V calling the shots I think this is impossible to predict. I actually like Bard for the fourth slot and I think he should get a longer look. The fifth spot could be Aceves,Doubront, or Cook if he is ready by mid April when they need a fifth starter. Like I said though with Bobby calling the shots it looks like Bards chances are getting slimmer by the day.

Yesterday I read several articles stating that Bards transition has been a failure to this point. I just don't see it, if you look only at the numbers then you could say that but if you take away the disastrous 2 2/3 inning relief appearance his ERA is 2.70 with a 1.10 WHIP (5H 6BB 10 IP). It seems to me that Bobby V is all too willing to pull the plug on this experiment.

Doubront had a good performance today. Pitching 6 innings and giving up only 1 run. Aceves on the other hand did not help his chances one bit. He gave up 9 runs in 3 innings, including 3 home runs. I think Doubront is going to earn the 5th spot, but now it is definitely a toss up for the 4th. Bard and Aceves now both have had shaky performances, but I guess the call is going to be tough to make. Bobby V wants Bard in the pen and the FO wants Bard in the rotation from what I am hearing.

I'm starting to like the idea of Cook and Doubront filling out the rotation over Aceves and Bard now hahaha

Me too. Aceves would get his innings when Doubront or Cook have short outings and we can also use him in later innings if we need to. Bard could be in the set-up role with Melancon and could even compete to be our closer with Bailey. If Cook cannot hold down a rotation spot until Dice-K comes back, then we could hopefully trade for someone. I think Cook would give us some decent innings. Padilla might not be a bad addition to our pen as well.

I hope Melancon can step it up' date=' because thus far, it doesn't seem he is impressing anyone right now.[/quote']

It's reason why Bobby is pushing for Bard back there and that there is still not a lefty till Hill comes back.

Right now Doubront got the inside track as a starter. Aceves got blown out the sky today. He could be heading back to the bullpen depend on Bard tomorrow.

I fully agree. It's just two things I worry about.

1.) Who takes his place in the pen?

2.) What is with the balks last year? How does one get to the majors and not know how to avoid a balk?

I really think Aceves has the goods to be a starter in MLB. The problem is that he may be too valuable for his own good (to the Sox) as a reliever.

Thought Morales was a lefty.. Depending on how useful he could be, Miller is a lefty too.

Not expecting anything out of them.

Hill seems like he could be much more useful as a starter, if he were to perform like he did in 07.

I'd be very careful of making sure Rich Hill's arm doesn't fall off. The bullpen is a better place for him.

Not saying I don't agree. He has done well in the pen for Boston, despite having a 7.80 ERA in Baltimore back in 09 while pitching relief. If he can give us several innings of 0.00 ERA ball again this season, color me stoked.

I don't expect it to happen, however. With a career ERA of 4.73, he'll earn some runs soon enough.

Good point. as long as he can keep up the consistency he has recently, stay healthy, and provide some quality innings, I'm all for it.

He does seem to be a better option than some of the other guys we have in the pen right now.

Angels Emerging As Front-Runner For Oswalt?

By Mike Axisa [March 24 at 10:25am CST]

The Angels are "suddenly the front-runner" for free agent right-hander Roy Oswalt, reports ESPN's Jim Bowden (on Twitter). The Red Sox remain in the mix, though the Rangers and Cardinals are fading out of the picture despite Chris Carpenter's neck problems.

That makes sense, man.
