The Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to surrender Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom in a trade for New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul, sources tell ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

Sources close to the process tell Stein that the Houston Rockets remain part of the talks and are trying to complete a deal that would send Gasol to Houston and the Rockets' Luis Scola, Kevin Martin and Goran Dragic to New Orleans, along with Odom.

In Paul, the Lakers would be getting an All-Star and U.S. Olympic Team member who has averaged 37.1 minutes, 18.7 points and 9.9 assists a game in his six seasons.

Paul can opt out of his current contract with New Orleans after this season, and the Hornets have been fielding trade offers in an effort to acquire new players for the star guard rather than letting him walk in free agency.

Nooooo, I loved Chris Paul. He's awesome, I remember watching him tear it up at Wake Forest. Why's he gotta be a Laker.

I'm f***ing PISSED. I seriously thought we were gonna get him. I guess we have to target Deron now.

If they get DH12, it will be the biggest ******** in the NBA EVER.

So it's not a done deal then.

This isn't a great trade for the Lakers, in the short term in the least. Sacrificing two prominent members of their frontcourt for another guard? I don't know. Lateral move for this season, Heat and Bulls would wreck them in a finals matchup.

LOL now multiple NBA personalities are posting on twitter than the other owners are lobbying for Stern to kill the deal, and he's actually considering it.

How pathetic. You know the Knicks and Cuban are leading the charge. What little bitches.

Posted

Yahoo says Stern killed the deal because the "owners complained."

Owners=Knicks? Celtics?

The Celtics have the best player for the Hornets--Rondo.

But the Knicks and the Lakers always bamboozle the other teams with those 3-way deals

where they wind up with the best player.

Any and all owners who protested should have a smoldering iron shoved up their ass. This is absolutely pathetic and collusion at its finest. Not to mention a slippery slope, killing a deal of this magnitude.

I agree, even though I hate the idea of the Lakers gearing up. That's BS that the owners are bitching because of a f***ing trade. It's ridiculous, the Lakers get some cap room and an elite guard, while the Hornets got possibly the better overall impact playerwise, and improved their front court significantly. How is it that a win-win deal is struck down, because the salary cap and Howard issue I guess. Ridiculous.

Yet they didn't stop the Heat from building their dream team. It might be for the better though, simply because the balance of power would basically be in the hands of a couple of super teams. I don't really watch like I used to, the amount of super teams out there is ridiculous. I remember when there were 10 teams that could all beat each other at any time. Now it's just 2, 3, maybe 4 teams that have a shot at the title really.

The Lakers started this syndrome when Kobe dictated who he wanted to play for in the draft years ago.

Then they engineered the swap for Shaq from Orlando, because Shaq wanted to play in LA. Now they probably will try to do the same with Howard.

Garnett didn't want to go to Boston. He just didn't object to the trade. The bigger markets didn't like it, because KG was viewed as a big market target. It's assumed that stars go to big markets as free agents. That's what happens when you don't have a hard salary cap. The big NY and LA markets ignore the cap and pay the luxury tax. They can afford it.

Riley is a crafty guy. He cleared enough salary to get 3 stars, using Wade to lobby Bosh and James. Then used fillers for the rest of the team. Cuban is like Buss in LA. He ignores the soft cap--the luxury tax is chump money for him.

So the teams kept talking, but the Lakers pulled out and traded Odom to Dallas for a trade exception and draft picks, which could help them land Howard.

Maybe the Clippers pounce. They definitely have the assets. They can pony up Eric Gordon, Mo Williams (for salary purposes), that Aminu guy, and throw in Chris Kaman for Emeka Okafor. Basically the same AAV, except Kaman expires this year while Okafor still has three years left. That should plenty to satisfy David Stern, even without draft picks, which they could use in combination with Eric Bledsoe to go get someone else later.

Bad from a Celtics perspective though, Chris Paul on the Clippers likely cripples the value of the first round pick Boston has from them courtesy of the Perkins trade.

Looks like Paul's going to the Clippers

I'm not gonna say it's a bad trade for the Clippers, but they overpaid. Gordon + Minny's pick is too much. Okafor's not going back to LA for Kaman, so the Hornets don't lose the back end of that contract, which would have been very valuable given the current state of that franchise. They're also keeping Bledsoe, who's now stuck behind Paul, Billups, and Mo Williams, so he'll have to be shopped to other teams on potential alone now.

All in all feels pretty mismanaged by the Clippers.

Lakers almost pulled a great trade but in the end they get nothing and actually get worse. lol

Mavericks are looking good for a repeat.

Yep, for people nobody's ever heard of. This also shows that LA has two teams, even if one is a perennial loser. What's that other MLB team in Chicago called again?

both of the MLB Chicago teams are pretty well-known, and both sucked for most of the last century. Soooo, I'm not getting the reference there.

LA does have two teams. lol

One is a massive perennial loser and the other one is the staple team.

But by the look of things, roles could be reversed soon.

Lakers are getting old fast and the Clips are getting young, faster and better.

Hey Reck, you couldn't still be bitter at how my Lakers took your Celtics down two seasons ago, could you? Well I didn't like it any better in '08 when the roles were reversed. I still think Dwight Howard wants to play in Los Angeles and I still believe we will get him. If the Magic think they can talk him into staying there they're bigger fools than the Cavs were believing that Lebron was in Cleveland for the long haul as well. The LA Lakers will survive and continue to prosper but I would start worrying about your Celtics. They are even older than the Lakers, don't have any real young talent worth talking about and their young buck Rondo seems like an *******. Well, it may be a few years before we meet again in the NBA Finals.

Wow you took a good bite but with a big swing and a miss. :harhar:

I'm not a Celtics fan.

Spurs fan here.

They are also old and in worst shape then the Lakers.

Celtics need to blow it up after this season. Trade Rondo too before his stock plummets on a crappy team and you won't be able to get anything back for him.

Celtics trade Rondo and they'll be back to their 90s-2006 era.

Rondo is their centerpiece. They are going to rebuilt around him.

I thought it was everyone's understanding that we were back to being terrible once this era was over.

Rondo is not a building block. The makeup of these Celtics teams have hidden his many weaknesses. Try to make him the man on a post-big 3 Celtics team and he basically becomes T.J. Ford. Or a present day Andre Miller. And you won't get dick back for him in a trade. I'd much rather blow it up and take my chances in what looks like a strong 2013 draft than have Rondo making us just good enough for #9 picks every year.

Hopefully we could deal Pierce midway through that season to some team who needs a SF for the stretch run and get another 1st rounder.
