The Boston media played a role in the demise of of the RS.

Both radio and tv sport shows denigrated Crawford and Lackey 24/7.

I am certain ball players listen to the shows. Crawford always looked like a deer in headlights and Lackey was bitter because of the disapproval.

I believe Crawford was unable to freely play his game and the media relentless pressure and disapproval was too intense to overcome.

Lackey could be a decent 5th starter and the media expected way too much. This made him even worse.

A) I disagree with you

B) If the players listen to the media they are stupid. Everyone has an opinion and most people express said opinions. By the time you get to the big leagues you better be used to criticism from everybody who watches the game. It's part of the game.

C) If Lackey could be a good 5th starter then he should get paid that way. He is being paid to do a hell of a lot more than be a possibility at the end of the rotation.

Just my .02 cents.

I'm sorry but I just don't buy it.

Crawford got a complete pass this season. In fact I have never seen more patience from Boston media and fans with regard to a new player coming in and getting paid big dollars to produce. Sure you had media reporting that the guy appeared to be having difficulty getting acclimated here but since there was clearly that possibility the media simply reported that the possibility had very likely become reality. But you never saw media calling for his head. Finally it got to be the end of the season with Sox now fighting for a post season birth and at that point yes media started to get on him because we really needed him then. The Sox found ways to score runs and win all through the season without Crawford which allowed him to float under the radar and kept Crawford from dealing with criticism for poor play. By season end not only had he not produced but he had done the same things wrong again and again and was still doing them when we really needed him to finally give us anything for production. To his credit, Crawford basically had the sense to keep his mouth shut.

Unlike Mr Lackey.....

Lackey is the highest paid pitcher on the team! Not only does he not produce but he can't keep from being a tool as well. He constantly complained about being removed from games, even after blowing leads and giving up as many as 8 runs glaring at Tito because he dared to come out to get him. Then he would complain to the media and open himself up for more fire. He gripped about somebody texting him something personal 30 minutes before he was to start a game. What do you think a pitcher should be doing 30 minutes before the start of a game? I hope its not reading text messages. In fact considering where he should have been you would almost think he stopped warming up and pulled his phone out of his back pocket to read a text message.

Belichick has a sign in the Patriots' locker room: Don't listen to the media.

The players should know the media is entertainment. And they can be part of that entertainment.

If you followed the Globe the last week or so, you would know that it's all about today: they changed their story on the Red Sox almost every day. First, defending status quo. Then after Francona was gone, it was-- what about everybody else?

The most sensible article was Mazz' one today. He actually had the audacity to question the committment

of the owner Henry to win. Makes sense. After all, the problem always starts at the top.

Players not paying attention to the media should be a given....complete agreement there. I have a good many problems with Mr. Henry so you won't get an argument from me there either.

Ok, I somehow thought the baseball players listened. The stuff they say on the local radio is brutal.

Like a lot of other threads this week.

OMG it's been terrible. New people thinking they have to start a new thread with each stupid thought that pops in their head.

Let's stop putting Crawford and Lackey in the same category. Their situations are polar opposites.

Lackey, from day one, has been a bad seed, a wing nut, a devisive jerk.

Crawford seems to actually care - I think his performance was negatively affected in part by the atmosphere in this dysfunctional clubhouse. Imagine leaving Joe Madden's team nirvana like atmosphere and coming to what sounds like a menagerie of egotistical *******s who cared only about themselves. If the Sox can weed out these bad seeds, he will rebound.

Management allowed this atmosphere to develop - they should refund our money. Let's stop selling out this ballpark in April and send them a message.
