From MLB Trade Rumors:

It would be interesting to see how the Yankees react if, as expected, C.C. Sabathia opts out of his contract. The Bombers have had contentious negotiations with key players in years past, but Sabathia is different. The hurler is only 31-years-old and coming off of three outstanding years in New York. If the talks to turn ugly, he'll certainly have other options.

Would it not be sweet? Would it not be a historically huge contract if the Yankees and Sox went to the mat for CC? Would the Sox still be able to sign Papelbon?

There is no earthly way that the Yankees get outbid on C.C. None. I actually have a feeling, but am not entirely sure, that the yanks won't be outbid on Wilson, either. We don't have needs in the pen or on offense, and we do have some dead weight coming off the books (Posada, Igawa, etc)

Last I heard' date=' Sabathia was planning to go to Philadelphia at the end of the season.[/quote']

They do need to add an ace this off season. Trust me I wouldn't be shocked if Philly handed him a 6/180 deal. Bastards must have their park next to the printing press, it's in Philly right?

Unless someone major comes off the books in Philly, they won't be able to sign any big names this winter.

The Phillies don't need CC. They are pretty much salaried out, anyways. If they don't win it all this year, their ten or so owners might not be willing to spend as much next year.

The Red Sox don't usually give big contracts to players over 30. I think, the Yankees, too, might be wary of loading up long term on CC again, but they may have no choice.

I was being sarcastic.;)

I'm sure C. C. will stay with the Yankees. We already have a very large wad of cash tied up in our below average starting pitching staff. to many other holes to fill.

Roy Oswalt is in an option year, and was talking about retirement, and Brad Lidge has a club option as well. Ibanez's 12 million is coming off the books, and he has been deadweight this year. Jimmy Rollins will either see his 8 million dollar salary go down in Philly, or go to another team.Other than that, no major players hit arbitration, or see significant bumps in salary.

You have to assume the Phillies have seen massive increases to revenue over the last few years. Based on all of these factors, I believe that Philadelphia will be able to afford him, if they're considering moving on Oswalt. If the Phillies win the World Series, I really don't see any reason why Sabathia wouldn't atleast consider joining the Phillies dynasty for a Cliff-Lee type deal.

I don't see CC out of NY, They will pay whatever he demands. Regardless, that seems like he looooooves the big spot lights.

It could happen, but I seriously doubt it. There will be guys coming off the books. Oswalt and Lidge are probables...but it isn't that easy. For one thing, they have to figure in esculation of existing contracts and the need to fill the field with championship level players.

Remember, Lee's contract has been $11 million this year but jumps to $21 million next year. Pence is due a big raise through arbitration. Howard's, Utely's and several other's contracts all get richer. Ryan Madson will need to be retained.

And, remember, if Lee hadn't agreed to take lesser money and structure his contract ot fit the Philly needs, he would have been a Yankee. If it comes down to greed, Sabathia will be a Yankee. If there are other factors involved, CC might be a Philly...or a Red Sox.

Pence and Hamels will be getting a good raise. If Lidge goes you have to assume they'll go after a closer, someone like papelbon too. 140 million in payroll + a good closer(13 to 15 million) I don't know if they'll be able to sign CC, but then again who knows 180 million payroll for them might not be out of the window.

The Phillies have pitching. GM Amaro is aware they need to balance out the lineup. Remember, they traded Lee when they initially acquired Halladay. They would not have signed him had he not wanted to go back to Philly. He took less to go there. The Yanks and Rangers had better offers on the table.

Sure, players will be getting raises. It happens. But most of those will be 1-3 million dollar raises, and I just referenced about 30-40 million coming off the books. This is not a situation like Felix Hernandez getting a 7 million dollar raise at the end of this year.

Huh, Lee gets a $10 million dollar raise. Pence will get much more than $1-3 million dollar raise. Closer? Third base? Left field? Shortstop? The Phillies will not become a one trick pony while Amaro is building that team.
