According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Guardians were awarded the claim on Twins' DH Jim Thome.

Of course, just because the Guardians won the claim doesn't mean they will get him. According to Rosenthal, the veteran slugger has a no-trade clause and would prefer to go to the Phillies. The Twins could always pull him back from waivers and release him, allowing him to sign with Philadelphia, though that would likely cause a major uproar among MLB general managers. The claim was awarded Wednesday, so the Guardians and Twins have until 1 p.m. ET on Friday to work out a deal. Source: Ken Rosenthal on Twitter Aug 25 - 12:56 PM

I hope the Guardians get him back so he can retire as an Indian.

Stay in the AL, Jim. The Phillies don't need you. ;) Seriously though, it would make a lot of sense for the Phillies to get him. That would be a nice bat coming off the bench. Doesn't make a lot of sense for the Guardians besides the fact that he could retiring with them. But he could get traded to the Phillies and then sign a 1 day contract with the Guardians andand retire if he wanted to go that route. :dunno:

As a big Thome fan I would love that :D Might not be logical though

Thome is lefthanded, so he's not a great fit for Boston's pinch hitting needs. Lavarnway is a better matchup for that.

It's not really at all, but he's extremely cheap, because one of the things that Bill Smith apparently did pick up from Terry Ryan who is IMO one of the best GMs of the past 20 years, is how to get players for very cheap. I don't want to hear about Mauer either, there was no way he was going to come cheap, a catcher who produces consistent .900 OPS and is pretty much a constant batting champion is extremely rare. On-topic: Thome has a very affordable contract, and he actually expects to be mostly on the bench, and used as a clutch bat off the bench.

I love Thome coming off the bench for the Twins, especially when there's that guy who, you know, sucks late in the game, you got your secret weapon who has about a 40% chance of reaching base, and even better, still has a lot of power. Thome's still a game-changer on the bench, and he could definitely be a good presence. Thome is one of my all-time favorite players, and is going to retire one of the greatest sluggers in baseball history. Honestly the more I think about it, why the hell not? He's cheap, the Sox are a contender.

Dude, Thome's a game-changer coming off the bench, it doesn't even matter what his handedness is really. It's not a logical trade by any means, but it doesn't have to be. He's inexpensive and he expects to sit on the bench and be a secret weapon that they put in late in the game in case someone who sucks is up when you need a big hit. Thome is perfect for that. I don't really see how handedness applies when his splits versus either LHP or RHP is virtually the same thing.
