Stress fractures are typically missed initially' date=' that's the standard for them. Which is why I told you guys that if he continued to have pain, especially AFTER a workout, that you have to worry about something structurally. They tried the rehab idea, it didnt work, so they went back for another evaluation. By the way, they did re-MRI him and it showed the fracture. Can I essentially get a free pass for life now when it comes to injuries? It just so happens that the sox guys have had these injuries of late, but I've been pretty spot on with the Yankees ones as well, without even laying hands. BTW, speaking of Yankees injuries, Hughes will eventually need exploratory surgery where they will find a partial cuff tear or a tear in the labrum. You heard it here first[/quote']

Not challenging you (I'm certainly in no position to do that), just wondering ... why do you thing Hughes has that type of injury?

Velo drop, unexplained, responding to a cortisone shot. Tells me that something is inflamed in there, and inflammation typically is generated from small tears in the cuff or labrum. His velo still isnt back to where it was and his FB command is worse than before. Makes me think that there is a structural problem brewing. Notice, I didnt give a timetable, since these kinds of injuries can be put off with good rehab, a la Wang in 2005. But eventually, the piper gets paid

Not sure why all of your anger is directed at me jackson, I never disagreed with your assessment on Buchholz and if you notice I've been saying "if" Buchholz comes back for a couple weeks now. Perhaps you should focus on the posters who disagreed with you. But if it makes you feel better, you were absolutely correct on his injury.

Francona said that a statement could come by tonight, tomorrow at the latest.

"The update we have is Clay was seen by Dr. Watkins," Francona said this afternoon. "The appointment has already been done. Now we need to let Dr. Watkins, Tom Gill, Mike Reinold – all the medical people – Buc, Theo, have a chance to sit and meet and talk and kind of sift through things. Maybe we’ll have something later tonight, at the latest I would assumed we’ll have something tomorrow.”

He'll be fine, they'll just suture it to his other disc and squirt some ketchup on the back of his uniform.

“Clay has a stress fracture in his lumbar spine. He is responding to treatments and his symptoms are improving. We have sent Clay to see three spine specialists, who all agree that the injury is stable and will heal on its own. Clay will follow a five-step structured rehabilitation program, which will progress as his symptoms allow. When completed, Clay will be cleared to resume throwing. There is currently no time frame on his return, and his return this season has not been ruled out.”

Any actual chance he returns?

I don't see how he could return. Won't he need to re-work his delivery in order to avoid this happening again? He'll be so out of it. 1% chance of return, I guess.

Where did you hear he's going to have to rework his delivery?

“I think there’s absolutely a chance,” said Red Sox medical director Tom Gill. “I just don’t know how big that chance is. I think that there’s a great chance he would be healed by then, so to speak. Or that the fracture would be stable by then. The question is, how much time does Clay then need to get Major League ready?

What is ahead for Buchholz is a five-step program that figures to be as monotonous as it is necessary if he’s to have any hope of pitching again this season.

“I’ve just looked at it briefly with [trainer] Mike [Reinold],” Buchholz said. “It’s a core stabilization and back stabilization type of exercise that can be over in a month and a half or it could take a little bit longer. I think there’s going to be a whole re-evaluation after a month of that program with Mike and the other guys in there, and we’ll go from there.”

From Rick Sutcliffe last night on ESPN. Wake me up when that guy has ever said anything valuable.

While not necessarily valuable, when he was tanked in the booth a few years back, it was pretty interesting.

No educated guess on whether he'll return or not?

Stress fractures are really difficult to guesstimate because he will have periods where he'll feel fine and others where he feels like he has a broken back. My guess is that he'll be able to throw off a mound in anger come the playoffs, but he wont be stretched out enough to start

I am guessing he will be out until next season. Stress fractures of the spine take time to heal, and I am betting th e Sox will want to take the time to heal properly and fully.
