Crawford said Tuesday that he was "creeped out a little bit" when Epstein told him that the club had monitored him, not only on the field, but off the field, in the months before signing him.

"I thought that was a little weird," Crawford said Tuesday. "I guess that's what they have to do when they're making that kind of investment."

Crawford said he was not certain at what stage in the process Epstein told him, but thought it was on the visit Epstein and manager Terry Francona made to his hometown of Houston before the winter meetings. Epstein confirmed that was the case.

"I can't remember when he told me," Crawford said, "but I was a little freaked out."

He told me straight up, like you [a reporter] just did," Crawford said. "I didn't say nothing, but I'm from an area where if somebody's doing that to you, they're not doing anything good.

"I get paranoid when I hear those kind of stories, so I definitely take a different approach when I do things now. It did have an effect on me, let me put it that way."

Assistant to the GM Allard Baird, who oversees the club's pro scouting department, was assigned to scout Crawford for most of the second half of the 2010 season.

"I knew they were scouting me," Crawford said. "Coaches would tell me this guy asked about you, or that guy."

But he said he had no inkling they were monitoring him off the field, too.

"I definitely look over my shoulder now a lot more than what I did before," he said. "Just when he told me that, the idea of him following me everywhere I go, was kind of, I wasn't comfortable with that at all.

"I don't know how they do it, how much distance they keep from you when they watch you the whole time. I definitely check my back now, at least 100 yard radius. I'm always looking over my shoulder now. Now I look before I go in my house. I'd better not see anything suspicious now."

Boo frickity who. If you don't think someone offering you 140M+ isn't going to "check you out", your naive. Get a clue man. I would be more concerned if they hadn't checked him out.

This seems more like a funny anecdote than anything serious. Well, its good to know that Crawford isn't cheating on his taxes, or his wife...

I'd respond in the same way for the press. I'd also realize how much they were spending on me and take into consideration that I was a big deal.

Unless your job is top level government security or intelligence, nothing justifies blatant spying on a potential employee. I love the "it's big business" idiotic justifications of the civil rights violations. Wonder how many owners received similar treatment and tactics during negotiations to buy a team.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm sort of with Crawford, it's creepy, and it's not really their business what he does off-the-field unless it occurs while he's with the team, and it gets to be a problem. I understand their point of view, and I'm sure pretty much every big signing gets similar treatment, but it definitely is not a cool thing to do. However, he is a huge, huge investment.

I'm pretty sure when GE promotes their next CEO, it's going to look like The Truman Show compared to the Crawford dealing, so what's the big deal? If I'm going to invest $140mm on someone, I would make sure they're not doing anything overly sketchy either.

I'm sure Dombrowski wishes he would have known about Cabrera's drinking problem before it got outed by the media, so that he could have been proactive about it.

And what if his life turns into the sideshow that Favre or Cabrera's? That kind of thing destroys a team.

I am genuinely surprised at this! A non-issue being blown up by the media during the off-season to the point where it actually becomes a story!!! Fascinating!

Funny how our "unbiased" Yankee fan eliminated Theo Epstein's quote on the subject:

Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said he employed "a bad figure of speech" when he said the Red Sox checked out Carl Crawford "as if we were privately investigating him" before signing the free-agent outfielder last December.

"Our scouts just did a real thorough job on background, that's all," Epstein wrote in an e-mail after being apprised of Crawford's comments. "[We] felt like we got to know him real well, that's all. I told him we got to know him real well and we really respected the decisions he made, even away from the park.

"We told him we trusted him with a long-term contract because of his work ethic and his decision-making, so we'd be involved in the bidding."

It's difficult to maintain credibility when you publish information selectively, mate, and i would advise against continuing that practice.

Cheers, mates!

The good trolls get people (sometimes even the one being trolled) to laugh with them, the bad ones just push a button repeatedly until you lash out. Just ignore it.

Bloody hell mate, it's just the good ol' internet, and it's not like there are some previously acquired and upgraded defensive establishments and/or resources in play here.

And being called a troll by people whose contribution consists of 60% macros and 20% "u mad brah"? posts is quite interesting indeed!

Cheers, mates!

I find Justin Bieber to be slightly less irritating than these last couple of posts.

I don't intend on posting like that.

Naahhh, not in this forum usually, last time was just perfect timing to use one, couldn't resist.

And if what Theo said is true, then it's much more understandable, but I'm not so sure I'd take it for the absolute truth just yet.

Say what? Civil rights violations?? You think they were wiretapping him?

That horse you rode in on is pretty steep isn't it? Do us all a favor and dismount.

You're right that part was a bit of an exaggeration, but if they ever acted as bold as to peer in his window, you might have a case that a law was being broken.
