Dojji-- that just means the Sox are more popular' date=' but the Pats have more dedicated fans.[/quote']

Not sure I even agree with that. A Pats game is a bigger deal than any one Sox game after all. And they've been better more consistently for longer than the Sox, let's see what happens to all those "dedicated" Pats fans when the team has its second straight playoff miss sometime in the 2020's after Brady has retired and his replacement hasn't been Brady.

The simple fact is... there are a lot more pink hat Red Sox fans than baby blue hat Patriot fans. Red Sox have the quantity' date=' but the Patriots fans are more dedicated. Most of "Red Sox fans" I know didn't watch more than five games all last season. Most Patriot fans I know didn't miss five games all season.[/quote']

Haha nope. Before this decade hardly anyone gave a damn about the Patriots, even in this state.

Even toward the beginning of this past decade when the red sox were championshipless and the Patriots were cranking one out every season the Red Sox were still bigger.

Even the pink hat fans of the Red Sox seem to know more about the team than people who claim they are diehard pats fans. Go to a mall and all you see are Tom Brady and Wes Welker jerseys. That is it. I'll see a wide varitey of sox shirts and jerseys though, from Ortiz to Okajima to even Lackey. A lot of people won't miss Patriots games based simply on convienence. It's easy to just hang out and party with people on a Sunday and watch a football game than it is to try and catch a bunch of 7 PM weeknight baseball games.

I guarentee if the Patriots go through a few year streak of missing the playoffs you won't hear anything about this team from anyone. They'll fade back into obscurity.

I think with more and more younger people thinking baseball is boring' date=' I think NFL will take it's place in New England sadly. But yeah, the Pats haven't been as huge till this season which is weird since they didn't even beat the Sox in hype during the great years of 01-04.[/quote']

Now with the Pats being out, it would be interesting to see what the media like in Boston post lose to the Jets. I think Sports Hub will be talking Bruins and WEEI will be talking Red Sox.

I think football is less entertaining to talk about than baseball is. For the general audience it is probably the better sport to watch because there is so much hinging on every play and every game, but in terms of being able to intellegently discuss the players and their skills, baseball's huge sample size makes it more interesting during non-game times.

Agreed. Football has so many special little roles and positions and stuff like that that it's hard for an individual player to stand out in the eyes of a casual fan outside of quarterbacks, running backs and receivers. Everything else is kind of a muddle of team play where you could point to any one of at least 6 of the men on the field as part of the reason why anything happened.

Baseball is a slow enough game that it's not that hard to figure out what's going on if you take half a second to understand the rules and it's an easier game to talk about because every play is in nature individual. Even on a few group efforts such as a double play, it's easy to see that the shortstop had to pick the ball up and make a good throw, second baseman had to field and relay, and the firstbaseman has to make the stretch and recieve the ball before the hitter touches the base. If some part of that chain of events breaks down it's not hard to figure out what happened and who screwed up.

Also pitching is very visual -- when it moves the way it's supposed to that's easy to see, when you leave it up or hang one, that's easy to see too. And so much of the game is a duel of minds and execution between the pitcher and various hitters and it's easy enough to break down that there's much more to talk about.

Also agree. Baseball is a slow game that can be broken into parts that can be easily expandable. Football on the other hand, is tough to have a intelligently discuss since you have the o-line , running backs, Qb, and all sorts of players that have an impact on the game.

And question for the New England people, are the demographics for the Pats and Red Sox different?

Well, baseball is a game of 1 on 1 matchups melded into a team game. Whereas football is the ultimate team sport. It is much easier to see the merits of one player in baseball than it is in football where weaknesses can be hidden in coverage or exploited by another team, etc.

And I hear UFC/MMA is bigger than baseball as well. It seems very cool nowadays for kids/teens/young adults to wear all the tapout gear and they get great PPV ratings.

I love UFC but no way in hell it's bigger than baseball. Where did you here that?

Some person on a NBA/Sports forum saying that the NBA could become the second biggest sport passing UFC.

I live in Europe and I wanted to ask which sport is more popular accross the States after NFL.Is it baseball or NBA?

Now, about the question on sox and patriots.I believe baseball in general is a special sport, mostly because of its 162-game season. It's hard for someone to be a trully faithfull fan and watch all the games however the fact that there is a game on almost every day makes it easier to familiarize with the players and the team.

If you're a patriot fan you 'll see your team's next game in about 8 months. That makes it hard to keep on...wearing gear around the year.
