The Red Sox will hire Curt Young as their new pitching coach, according to WEEI's Alex Speier. He says a formal announcement could come as soon as today. Young, formerly of the Athletics, replaces John Farrell. Farrell is now manager of the Blue Jays. A few other Red Sox notes from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe...

I like this move.

Yeah' date=' I was wanting to try to make the Cy Young reference too but Emmz beat me to it fair and square.[/quote']

+1 for being the first to get it.

Who?

It's a Cy Young reference, who would be like a century-and-a-half-year-old man. Ask a700, I think they used to play together, back when he actually was a .700 hitter. Now he's only like a .200 hitter at best.

A brief search for Curt Young info brought up this interview from BP (2007).

There's a lot of interesting things there. As someone who loves pitching, and the nuances of the craft, he seems to speak it very plainly and clearly. I don't have any idea about John Ferrell's views, but I like what Young says and how consisely he says it.

DL: What do you know about pitching now that you wish you knew during your playing days?

CY: The changing speeds-factor. As a pitcher, sometimes you think that you can throw the ball by people, and by now Ive learned the effectiveness of an off-speed fastball, going with maybe three or four different speeds with your fastball. Also, using changeups in different locations. Guys have been possessed, including myself, to throw changeups away to righties, but change-ups in to righties can be effective, too. There are some different ways of attacking hitters that I didnt know as a pitcher, and now Im trying to pass that knowledge along to the guys Im working with here. Pitchers are always learning.

The best pitchers are those who master the off-speed fastball. I think about Pedro in his prime, Greg Maddux, Johan Santana, Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay and Tim Lincecum making people look foolish with a well timed off-speed FB over the heart of the plate. I think that's a natural next step for both Lester and Buchholz in particular. It is something Matsuzaka seems to do quite effectively.

Not to mention something that I only saw out of Beckett the year he was robbed for the Cy Young. He's the guy I'll be watching to see if the lesson takes.
