I'll stay hopeful although it seems that hope is slipping away. If this falls apart, it is a cluster f***. The FO will look like fools, and what did they expect? With such a short negotiating window, AGon had all the leverage. They put themselves in a very stupid position.

Deadline Passes For Red Sox, Gonzalez

By Mike Axisa [December 5 at 1:13pm CST]

SUNDAY, 1:13pm: The BoSox could still make the deal without an extension, provided that the parameters are close, Heyman tweets. Going into overtime may not be an issue as the league understands the significance of the player and the situation, Heyman adds (via Twitter).

Reason to hope?

Just in: Bruins trade Seguin and Tuukka to Toronto for Kessel.

For a split second there, I thought you were that GoBruins idiot. If I didn't notice your user name, I would've posted something not too nice.:D

I would be pissed more at the Bruins if they trade Seguin then if the Sox Didnt sign the extension

Yup. Not going to lie it's nice to see the Bruins look like professionals while the Sox look like morons. Something new lol

12 more hours?

Sox-Gonzalez in OT?

The 2 p.m. deadline for signing Adrian Gonzalez to a contract extension has come and gone, but an extension of the deadline could have taken place. According to one source familiar with the talks, some progress is being made therefore it would reason that the sides would continue to hammer something for the remainder of the afternoon.

Major League Baseball grants up to 72 hours for some sign and trade deals and if the parties are close, nobody is going to tell them they can't keep negotiating.

Some of the Red Sox brass has arrived here in Orlando for the Winter Meetings, but the brain trust is still in Boston which could mean they aren't coming to the meetings until late tonight or tomorrow. After all, signing Gonzalez is their biggest piece of business anyway.

One of the big questions is whether the Red Sox would complete the deal without a signing? While no one involved with the talks has been able to answer that question, the feeling around the team is they want to get a deal done with Gonzalez and believe it can be pulled off in the next 12 hours or so.

According to one AL executive, the belief is that Gonzalez was seeking an eight-year deal, while the Red Sox were hoping for a six-year. Obviously Boston would be able to raise the anty on Gonzalez' $6.2 million salary this season with a bonus and then either a six-year or seven-year extension at $20 million plus per season.

SUNDAY,1:43pm: The deal fell through, a source tells Jon Heyman of SI (via Twitter).

The Red Sox were unable complete a deal for Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, SI.com has learned.

The Padres and Red Sox had previously reached an agreement on a trade that would have sent the All-Star to Boston for four minor league prospects. The Red Sox had a deadline until 2.p.m. ET today to sign Gonzlaez to a contract extension.

Gonzalez, who has one year to go on his contract with San Diego for about $6 million, is seeking a contract similiar to the one Mark Teixeira received with the Yankees after the 2008 season, $180 million over eight years. Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, another comparable player, recently signed a five-year, $125 million contract.

The Red Sox and Padres had been discussing Gonzalez for more than a year. The Padres' front office is very familiar with Boston's prospects, as GM Jed Hoyer, assistant GM Jason McLeod and new top executive Josh Byrnes all once worked for Boston.

Gonzalez, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2000 draft, has spent the past five years in San Diego, his hometown, and in the past four seasons has had at least 30 home runs and 99 RBIs.

YESSSSSS dead deal. now i can officail tell this team to go f*** themselves. Sorry to be a dick but I told you guys what a piece of s*** front office we have. I'm done with the Redsox and I hope they do indeed become a laughing stock in the MLB. When John Henry sells the team I'll be back until then I just can't find myself to watch a AAAA team.

Heymann is the guy from San Diego who has been negative on this one all day. Other reporters have been saying different things.

Heyman is one of the most respected writers in the business.

This.Is.********.

Indeed. They flew around the country for 3 players 0-3. At what point do you fire the GM? Or sell the team. I am really annoyed and I will not attend a game until I see changes in the front office.

I hope it still has legs

I doubt the deal is dead. Gonzo is prolly gonna sign the extension at some point.

If I was the Sox i would still make the trade and tell Gonzo that if he wants 8-150 then he has to wait to see how the shoulder works in the ST. Would not only make Gonzo happy then it will make the Sox happy with more money in the pocket.

Why is it that if you put his name into google, nothing baseball related comes up? I'm not saying he's wrong, but he seems biased, and he definitely isn't well known.
