What is the book on the Drew catch? Should he have let it drop foul? Eck says he doesn't know what the book is on that. I wonder what Buch was thinking when Drew caught the ball? He can't say anything even if he disagreed with Drew catching it.

What a depressing loss. Would've been better off sending Bill Hall to the mound for a snappy 1-2-3 inning.

Two very different views.

Remy said "at this point in the game you got to get outs".

Eck said "as a pitcher I want that ball dropped. I'm going to get Joyce out".

I'm torn.

But it's over.

Sloppy stupid play early in the season to dig the hole

Injuries in the middle part of the season to halt the drive to the top

players didn't return from injuries in time to help for the final push

No reinforcements at the trading deadline

That's the story of our season

A season if missed opportunities

What did you think as it was happening? I have to admit that I was hoping Drew wouldn't get there.

I think there is probably a best answer here in terms of leverage, but on the field the play has to be made in the moment, when chasing a ball into foul territory, onto a mound in the opposing bullpen.

There are a small group of outcomes that would have led this play to be a win. Namely, Drew lets the ball fall and it turns into a non-productive out like a K or a infield fly ball. If Joyce gets on base via a walk or base hit, double, HBP, etc., then he's the leading run AND there is one fewer out.

All in all, in the opinion of this lifelong baseball fan, Drew would have been taking a big gamble to NOT make that play and he did the right thing making the catch. He might have made the wrong choice (i.e., he was too far from home to make a difference, Buchholz was pitching exceptionally well and had a good chance to get out of the inning, etc.,) but as a rule of thumb making the catch is a safe play.

That's exactly what I was thinking at that moment.

No way he makes the throw to the plate.

Even Dewey and Jackson would have had trouble with doing that.

Ha ha, yea... it's from the SNL skit where a fake (and funny) Sean Connery was on Jeopardy and said the following (read it out loud in your best Sean Connery voice):

"Well ya were wrong, ya mountebank. I poshe a conundrum to ya, a riddle if you will. What'sh the differensh between you and a mallard with a cold? One'sh a shick duck... I can't remember how it endsh, but yea, ya mother'sh a whore."

I dunno... can't shake hearing him say it...

If I was Drew, I would have gone for the catch, but what were you hoping as you saw the play developing?

Just read the book and I have the movie ready to watch. I feel like it's going to differ significantly from the book though.

The game thread is almost done. So I'll share a little story with you and anyone else that may care.

About (emphasis on that word) 25 years ago, I had a conversation with a friend who was a QA guy in Groton. Very smart guy. Mech. Engineer. He had spent his entire career there inspecting grain of metals used in the construction of submarines. He had Top Secret Clearance and the whole nine yards.

We were just sitting having a few beers outside our motel in Newark De.. We were there for the Nascar races in Dover. Anyways, he told me of a a guy named Clancey who was about to have a book published that revealed a lot of technology from the U.S. Sub program.

He said that somehow Clancey had access to stuff that was classified and that the book conveyed many facts and was, to a large degree, accurate.

The book was a work of fiction. But much of it was based on real events.

Naturally, I bought the book and saw the movie!

The movie is pretty faithful to the book.

The book is better because you use your imagination.

Both are good though.

Clancey's best book (of the ones that I have read) is Cardinal Of The Kremlin.

Just got back from work, why the heck wouldn't we go to Papelbon before Atchison? I understand the whole "save the closer for the lead away", but the best opportunity to win is by sending your best pitchers to the mound. This is just an instance of losing the game before being able to "use" Paps. In a game this important, you have to give yourself the best shot every inning, every pitch. If we take a lead and have to use another closer, fine, but I'm not losing the game with my best/2nd best pitcher still on the bench.

That was an awesome story! I can't say that I'm surprised that Clancy had some inside connections. His knowledge of military technology has always baffled me.

In honor of all this "October" talk... I've decided to adjust my avatar to something more fitting, with a serious dose of wishful thinking for good measure.

Tomorrow's a new day, new game. Go Sox. :D

Should've, Would've, Could've. Game is over and their is nothing we can do about it now. Tomorrow is another day.
