Just got back in from watching the meteors (perfectly clear sky tonight vs completely clouded last night), too bad they lost. 2 straight must win games blown, this team is done. They've shown flashes, but they keep blowing it.

While they would have been a boost, the offense was not the problem. The problem was the inconsistency from Dice-K and Lackey and the missed time (and suck) of Beckett in addition to a lousy pen. If we had a decent pen we would have won the last two games and would be closing the gap in the division.

I think Pedroia and Youkilis are more than just offensive pieces though. I imagine Pedroia makes the weak groundball up the middle play tonight. Lowrie is out of place at 2B, even though he's a capable defender. Likewise, Youkilis has a better stretch than Lowell does. The right side of their infield is missing.

 

I would also argue that at times the past few weeks the offense has been the problem. That's not to say they would have gone undefeated, but having Pedroia and Youkilis stretches out the offense and increases the number of tough outs, which makes it more difficult for SPs to last, which wears down the bullpen. It's a cascading effect.

Beckett looked like he was wincing in the 5th after a few pitches. I wouldnt be surprised if he's still hurt. He couldnt locate his curve to save his life, and that isnt typical for him. And a lot of his pitches were up, which could also lend credence to the injury theory, especially a back. It's tough to finish off pitches when your back is barkin
