If Theo encounters bad luck in the offseason' date=' he's the starter next year.[/quote']

Bad luck......ohhhhhh you mean not spending money to bring back Vmart. That type of bad luck?

No, more of the a team offering V-Mart a ridiculous contract and he takes it.

Or some team outbidding us for him, yeah, that type of bad luck.

Never should have gotten to this point. In the offseason he said he wanted to stay here. He said he wanted an extension. He said like liked to play here. We will get outbidded, yeah....but dont call that bad luck. They forced this upon themselves.

They resigned Beckett after his solid 2009, and the people here have been killing Theo for it, even though they got Beckett at a great discount. Players will give discounts on their contracts if it gives them extra security early, like Beckett did, but I think it was in both of their best interests to wait till the end of this season.

So they should never extend players who have shown the ability to play in this city? Beckett disappointed this season and some question if he is a true ace, thats fine......Id rather extend Beckett than sign a Pavano or Vasquez who put up big numbers in smaller venues. Vmart has shown that he can in fact catch, and could have been the catcher of the future. We have one of the best rotations in baseball and Vmart is the one on the other end. He cant throw....and it sucks, but how many catchers are out there that can put up his offensive numbers and at least handle a staff? Not many.

Our concerns about Vmart were his defensive shortcomings. Salty cant even throw the ball back to the pitcher and from all accounts is a bad defensive catcher. So in the end we trade a bad defensive catcher who has already proven to be an offensive workhorse for a fringe player who hasnt proven anything in MLB and is probably worse than Vmart defensively.

Not a good trade off.

Except that VMart only played for the Red Sox half a season--catching only 33 games-- and its not exactly like they've let him go yet. There are a hundred reasons why it makes more sense for them to have waited out this season.

It makes sense to see how healthy he is through the season. Considering the expiring contracts at 3B and DH, it makes no sense to get this guy on long term if he might not be able to catch halfway through the contract. Consider the fact that Vmart hasn't caught more than 100 games since 2007. Was Beltre going to be successful? Were they going to get A-gon afterall? Was Ortiz going to fall off the face of the earth? Would one of their two big-bat prospects strike gold? Vmart could have easily been a logjam waiting to happen, and as we saw with Varitek, sometimes catchers just hit a wall that they can't get past.

Salty is a backup plan. There's a chance he's never even going to make it back to the majors.

This guy is a bust. Theo is stubbornly clinging to the first prospect scouting reports for this guy. Two teams have thrown in the towel on him. At least he didn't cost much. Hopefully, Theo still pursues a catcher for 2011.

Nope....he is the excuse to let Victor Martinez walk. People thought Martinez was bad defensively? Wait til they see this train wreck.

Next season could be a disaster......and this season has not even ended yet. This year was a bridge year.

Next year is the scene from back to the future, when they crash through the unfinished bridge and crash and burn in the canyon.

Bridge year......bridge to what?

I should probably pay more attention' date=' I didn't realize the 2011 roster was already set in stone[/quote']

Yeah it pretty much is.

Take this years roster....minus the good players who are leaving for free agency....and there you have it.....your 2011 AAAA Boston RedSox.

Because you know they aint spending s***, and minus a few players the Yankees will most likely sign....there aint s*** out there.

Losing...........get used to it.

We have the second Highest payroll in Baseball. How exactly is that not spending s***?

Hows that working out this year?

With the FA's available this offseason how well do you think they will fair considering the Yankees will be signing at least 2 of the top tier FA's?

Maybe I should rephrase my statement......they dont know HOW to spend their money.

Third place, get comfy.

LOL.

Now you rephrase? Did you "misremember" what is going on with the team? What a joke. You piss and moan like a bitch in heat about how "cheap" they are for a couple of months, with many bringing up these kinds of facts that make your accusations hard to support, and then it's just, "oh let me rephrase".....sweep it under the rug if you will. I guess we should listen to your next 4 months of drivel before you need to reclarify your point again, right? No thanks.

Im sorry didnt know I struck a chord with you, its just the internet though....so pump the brakes.

Im pissed off about what happened last offseason and more recently the trade deadline. This is a public forum for people to express what they feel, so if you dont like my opinions you can either ignore me or kick rocks, either way I dont give a f***.

Pussy. You are making very specific accusations here.... strong statements if you will. I'm engaging in the debate you have set. Don't back away when something as inconvenient as a challenge presents itself.

They didn't get him because they wanted to stick him in the minors forever. It's a very high chance Saltalamacchia is with the team next April.

Let's delve into this a bit more... what happened last offseason that made you pissed off? The only logical answer would be the signing of John Lackey, but the only better move than that (that I can see) would have been NOT SPENDING ANY MONEY, and saving it for this year. But that move would play pretty well into the narrative you are spinning about them not fielding a competitive team. During the offseason the main discussion was not whether they should or shouldn't sign Mike Cameron (an admittedly neutral and small-time move no matter how it played out); nor was the discussion about how Beltre would be an MVP candidate (everyone's pontificating powers disappeared on that one, except Theo and Co., who get very little credit for that move). No, the discussion here last year was clamoring for the signing of Jason Bay.

This board seems to be full of "grass is greener" types who seem to think there are a plethora of great options out there at every turn. I don't see it.

This team is only as good as the options they have and those options aren't always very good. I'm willing to bet this team will be back in the playoffs consistently either next year or the year after and have another 5-6 year run of highly competitive teams. That's more than most teams can say, but it isn't enough for many of you.
