Thoughts?

I personally felt the MLB owners would never let him bid/buy one of the "old" franchise's. He has a much better chance at a expansion/newer franchise. The Rangers seem to be a perfect fit however. Not too old, some history but nothing major. If that team can get some finical backing they will be a powerhouse.

Also speaking of the Rangers,

Rangers president Nolan Ryan testified at a bankruptcy hearing Wednesday that financial pressures are hurting the club and could prevent it from keeping slugger Josh Hamilton, whose contract is up this season. "I don't know that I want to be there [if] Josh Hamilton doesn't come back next year," Ryan testified. Ryan said the cash shortage is affecting the team's trades and its need for a new video board and forced it to close a summer-league farm team in the Dominican Republic.

Is this true? I checked on Cots, and it doesn't have him listed as a possible FA. Anyone know the deal?

If Hamilton hits the open market, he could be looking at a big pay day. I know he has had his issues and they are real concerns. But does anyone think he could play in Boston.? I salivate at the Idea at adding him to the team. And cringe when I think of some of the "what if's".

Hamilton is in his 4th big league season. He has two more arbitration yrs ahead of him. Hamilton is paid 3.25 mil this yr, and since it will be his second to last arb season, he'll probably command $15 million in arbitration

Ya that is a big jump.

Has this been a storyline at all this year and I've just been missing it? I would think the possibility of Hamilton hitting the market in one way or another would be buzz worthy news. Especially with the season he is having.

Texas needed Seattle to kick in 4 million for Cliff Lee. Yeah, the Rangers are cash strapped. Until they get a buyer, they are screwed. Expect a firesale in the offseason if they are unable to secure a fiscally sound buyer by the beginning of Spring Training

We'd have a better crack at Michael Young to replace Beltre at third

No thanks. They would be better of just extending Beltre for probably less money.

Beltre has been money this yr, but he had only one similar season, in a contract yr. I dont think Beltre is a guy you lock up long term.

Michael Young would be a good fit, although he doesnt really fit into the lineup as currently constructed. When Ells and Pedey are healthy, those guys are 1-2 and Young really is a good #2 hitter. You'd be paying $15 million or so for a guy who'd hit 7th or 8th. You're already paying $14 million for a guy hitting 6th or 7th, that doesnt make a ton of sense

And you really think Boras will let us extend him?

Beltre's gone. The way his contract is structured this is virtually a 1 year deal and then he'll go get a big deal somewhere else, especially with how poor the market has been at third base in the last several years. Taking a salary dump on a competent but overpaid 3B may be our best possible way to fill 3B with a capable player. Besides, that way we get two picks.

I know it's a one year deal, but that doesn't mean they couldn't re-sign him. Extend was a bad word to use sorry.

I think a 2-3 year deal at 10-12M annually would be a competitive offer. While Young has like 3 years 48M left on his deal after the year is over.

Personally I hope it's neither. My preference would be to see Youk at 3B come next season anyways.
