He was a fans owner, as a Yankees fan you gotta love the guy b/c he did whatever it took and spent whatever it had to take to make the Yankees winners again. Sure you can hate the guy for being the Yankees owner, but if he was say, the Red Sox owner we would all love this guy. I loved nothing more than seeing him freak when the Sox beat the Yanks during the 03 or 04 years, but I still respect the guy. He was a generous guy and I never forget that he allowed the Sox and their fans to party in Yankees Stadium after the 04 0-3 comeback

I haven't chimed in here on talksox about this yet, but it's obviously a sad week for all Yankee fans.

Tonight for the All Star game the Yankee players and coaches wore their customary black armband, but when the second half gets underway they will also be wearing patches in memory of both the Boss and Sheppard.

The Sheppard one, which I like a lot, will be worn on the left sleeve, above the black armband. The GMS patch will be worn over the heart; above the interlocking NY on the home uniforms, and above the word "York" on the road uniforms. Not a fan of the Steinbrenner patch though.

Remember this, he left the lights on all night at YS.

how about a patch that just says THE BOSS. They dont need his full name there. Everyone knows who we are talking about

What if they had a patch that just said "The Boss"? I mean, they could do it over a Yankee logo if they had to...

The mile wide and inch deep portion of NYY fans may think it's referring to Bruce Springsteen. ;)

He'll never win a humanitarian award' date=' but damn it, he was a great owner and a businessman. Granted, he had his flaws and his discretions, but the guy turned around a struggling franchise and made it the class of the MLB. I may never shed a tear for the guy as a person, but as an icon, he'll surely be missed.[/quote']

Yeah, The Boss was a great owner, but he had some ruthless tactics, but it was all about winning, it's all he really wanted to do was to win at all costs. You can hate him as a person if you want, but I personally have respect for the way he was as an owner, probably the most powerful owner in sports for most of the time he's been running the Yankees.

getting suspended from baseball (the second time) was the best thing that ever happened to him. he was the peter angelos of baseball in the 80's and yankees fans cheered when he was suspended. fortunately for him, gene michael turned the yankees organization into the winning franchise that they are today. if steinbrenner was never suspended and continued to trade away the yankees best prospects and run the team into the ground, i doubt yankees fans would be saying nice things about him right now
