Just FYI, Salty got demoted due to his inability to throw out runners and a bad case of the yips...

Still has a hard time throwing guys out (15% CS) and looks "forced" throwing the ball back to the pitcher.

May be a future 1B candidate...

Like that they got Salty.

Why? He doesnt do anything to help us. Hes a terrible defensive catcher who has developed Steve Blass disease aka "throwing yips" and hasnt hit enough in AAA to be valuable enough as a DH/1B solution for Texas to replace Chris Davis.

This only gives the FO a reason to not bring back Vmart next year. He is their excuse for not paying Vmart his money. They will ballwash him saying hes a great catching prospect and blah blah blah then turn around and talk s*** about VMart like they do o everyone they dont want to spend money on re-signing. Same mind washing game every offseason with this regime.

If you needed this trade to figure out that the season wasn't going anywhere you weren't a very knowledgeable fan.

I just hope we get to see a lot of young guys to give the rest of this season some real meaning and give us something to watch. I wouldn't mind if guys who weren't going to be here at the end of the year were cut loose and sent to contenders "as a courtesy."

Doji, f*** you.....let people be pissed off about it.

We arent paying 200% more on ticket prices than every other team in baseball to watch second rate players. We are not the Pittsburgh Pirates.

 Yea, we get it, you are an awesome, knowledgeable fan, nowhere near a bandwagon. Any other elitist remarks ya wanna throw out there?

We're just fans trying to figure out the trades that went down. That's all man. No need to put us down.

Asked about Mike Lowell, Theo said he needed to speak with player first. Sounds like a resolution is at hand

Theo said "empty feeling" not to be able to add reliever or OF, felt club aggressive, still feels help could come in August waiver period

The sox made one trade for the future with Salty. My guess is that Theo is okay with standing pat OR he didnt think he could get more than equivalent value of 2 draft picks in the first 2 rounds for VMart or Beltre. Regardless, IMO, they could have gotten some serious prospect loads for VMart or Beltre and by not shoring up the pen or getting another COFer the sox are pretty much sunk

I don't see why you guys didn't see this coming all along after Theo pretty much called this season a bridge year this winter.

The reason why I didn't see it coming was because this season was never lost. They have been in it all along, and to see them just give up like this is a real downer. You can see it by so many things they've done this season. Ignoring the need for a better outfielder all season is inexcusable, and when they finally found one in Nava, they dropped him for garbage like Hermida and are now trying to use Kalish, who probably hasn't had enough time in AAA.

The same thing goes with Lowrie and the bullpen. How long did this team just ignore bullpen issues, and how many games has this team lost after the 6th inning? I don't have a ton of statistics, but I do know that the Red Sox are something like 4-9 in extra inning games. Why is Okajima a better choice than Robert Manuel/Dusty Richardson/Bowden?

And if they didn't like the options they had in Pawtucket (Doubront, Bowden, Nava etc) then why not trade them to fill in some of the holes?

I simply have one phrase that perfectly summarizes how they've handled the season so far.

"Bogar is still here."

The Red Sox have given up nothing. They didn't trade away any key veterans, in fact the only roster player they traded was having a terrible year, a possible addition by subtraction. This very much fit the definition of "stand pat" that we all projected to happen a couple days ago..

How come when a team trades with us, they usually ask for a lot and try to screw us over, but when the teams try and trade with the Yankees, they bend over and give away players, in addition to giving up cash, for nothing in return?

I was wondering the same thing. The Yankees get a 5 time All-star for two mid-level prospects, and when the Sox want middle relief help, everyone seemed to be asking for Casey Kelly.

Because the yankees are trading with the worst Gm in the league.<_>

Those teams needed to dump salary. Even though they're sending money to the Yankees, Berkman and Wood are getting huge contracts this year (and next in both cases?) off the books, and the Yankees are footing the bill. Simply put, they're not worth the money they're paid.

Although I have no clue what Toronto's GM is thinking. This was his best chance to get something for a 34-year-old reliever, and he spends the deadline demanding Jesus Montero, Casey Kelly, and Jose Iglesias. I think J.P. Riccardi is secretly running that team in some way.

Berkman and Wood both have club options for next year, that will be declined. Additionally, the Yankees are footing the bill? That's news to me. The Astros and the Guardians are paying the majority of the money for 2010.

This was explained by Abraham this afternoon. They wanted top prospects because they plan to offer arb and will be awarded two high picks when he signs as a FA.

Berkman will definitely be a type B free agent, and there is a very good chance he is going to be type A. Were the guys the Yankees traded for him worth two high draft picks and losing a franchise player?

The Astros wouldn't be able to offer Berkman arbitration, for fear that he might accept.

He's having a rough season' date=' but I have a hard time believing that no one will offer him a 2-3 year deal.[/quote']

But not nearly worth the money he'd stand to make if he accepted arbitration. He may decline it, and go with the multi year deal that you mentioned (although he'd surely be thinking about the Jermaine Dye situation), but it wouldn't be a chance the Astros could take.

My bad, I thought both Wood and Berkman had guaranteed years next year, and that's why I thought the Yankees taking in a salary dump (since the money they received only really covers this year).

Are the Elias rankings done solely based on this year? If that were the case, I can't imagine Berkman getting type A, but I don't think that's how it's done...

Elias uses a proprietary blend of stats over the last two years to rate the FA class. They've never published how they come about the rankings, but I believe it has been reported that they sub in career averages for time missed on the DL.

I finally found the site that I've lost before. It comes from someone who reverse-engineered how the rankings work then details who's where.

They haven't released an updated one for Berkman, but currently his score would make him a borderline Type B (as in, he's almost in the category where you don't get anything by letting him walk).

That surprises me. I look at his OPS of .900 from last year, and have a hard time believing that, but those stats look pretty official. It also seems odd to me that Ortiz only has a few more points than Hermida...
