(11-4, 2.42 ERA)

Tim Wakefield has his knuckleball working again, which usually spells trouble for the Rays. And when it comes to facing Tampa Bay lefty David Price, consider Boston among the many teams this year that have been confounded by the hard-throwing first-time All-Star.

On Wednesday at Tropicana Field, when these pitchers square off in the finale of a three-game series between American League East rivals, both will be trying to get an important divisional win as the All-Star break looms.

Wakefield has some momentum to build on, having matched a season high with eight innings pitched in his past outing, a win over Baltimore on Friday, when he gave up two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out four. In the process, he passed Roger Clemens for the most career starts at Fenway Park (201) -- also the most starts of any active pitcher at one ballpark.

"I was throwing a lot of strikes with a lot of movement, and I think that was the biggest key to being able to last as long as I did," Wakefield said.

Wakefield will be making his first start against the Rays since May 2, 2009. He's 9-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 18 career starts at Tropicana Field, but 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA over his past two games under the dome since Sept. 17, 2008.

Price, meanwhile, said he can't let the recent news that he'll be a member of the AL All-Star team -- and that he also has a chance to start the Midsummer Classic -- distract him from the task at hand.

"We still have [five] more games to the All-Star break, so I haven't put a whole lot of thought into it. Just still focused on today and tomorrow," Price said. "That hasn't crossed my mind. Tomorrow's a big start for me. I'm looking to go out and stay consistent with what I'm doing right now. I don't think about that.

"They're still the Red Sox. They still put out one through nine who can swing it every time out. They're still a good lineup. They're still playing good baseball, hitting the ball well, so I'm not going to approach it any differently."

Hey all, just checking in...

Only one run down? That's not too bad. Thought they'd run away from us tonight.

Yikes, my mere presence has caused us some defensive issues: our catcher sucks, our SS can't decide what he wants to do then throws high, and Wakefield can't find first base. Sorry about that, I take full responsibility. Check back in later.

Cheers.

Papelbon in the game in the 7th inning ? that's strange

And now Matt Garza is coming in to close the game for the Rays. What the f*** is going on?

Maybe tomorrow I'll try and start the game thread to infuse some mojo? And then when I forget to make a thread after 4 wins VA Sox Fan can step in...

Just don't pull a hammy rushing to the computer to get the game thread going. We can't afford any more injuries, unless your last name is Drew.

Why the hell did Garza close this one out

The Sox knocked him out after three innings a couple of nights ago, so it was probably his day to throw in the pen anyway.
