This just in: Water is wet.

Rose, I think, knew more or less what would happen to his legacy. Sometimes something's worth laying EVERYTHING on the line for, even your dignity and self-respect, maybe he thought the record was one of those things.

Mythbusters did a show on it, actually. Very interesting. They standardized the swing with a machine. They standardized the velocity. Then took over 100 swings with 2 identical bats, except one was corked. There was no significant statistical difference. IIRC, the corked bat didnt meet statistical significance, but was actually shorter than the non-corked one. Regardless, it doesnt make any sense for cork to increase the force impacted on the ball, especially since cork is more pliable than the hard wood of ash or maple. It should deaden the ball a little.

Yes but since the cork is lighter than the wood that it is taking over it makes the batter able to swing faster, which some scouts had complained prior to the season about Pete Rose.

Nowadays' date=' you can get bats with thin handles which effectively allow you to increase your bat speed due to decreased weight, but keep the barrel solid. Those should be illegal[/quote']

you just took out all of Ted Williams stats. He used to thin his handle out to make it lighter.

His excuse will continue to be that he still didn't take steroids

While, I think that he should be in the hall of fame, I disagree that corking his bats is okay since it doesn't actually help

If you cheat on a test off somebody who fails, and you fail as a result and get caught and get a 0, you could argue that you would have done better if you HADN'T cheated, but the reality is that you were trying to get an edge the wrong way and are guilty
