Sox news and notes from Cleveland

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff June 7, 2010 03:45 PM

A few pre-game notes from Jacobs Field:

Fenwy Park is going to host a soccer game between Celtic FC of the Scottish Premier League and Sporting Clube de Portugal.

This will be big news in my hometown of New Bedford, where Sporting may have more fans than anywhere outside of Portugal.

As for the Sox here in Cleveland:

* Saw Jeremy Hermida running in the outfield along with Jacoby Ellsbury. More on their status once we speak to Terry Francona.

* Boof Bonser is here and will be added to the roster. No word yet on the corresponding move.

* The draft starts at 7 p.m. and we'll have the names of the players the Sox select on the blog as they become available. So stay tuned for that.

UPDATE, 4:21 p.m.: Here's the latest from Terry Francona:

* Jon Papelbon is on the three-day family leave/bereavement list. No reason was provided.

* Jacoby Ellsbury will head to California later this week for a third opinion on his ribs. Scott Boras suggested it and the Sox agree. All sides seem interested in easing Ellsbury's mind.

* Mike Cameron gets a day off after a long game Sunday. He's scheduled to play tomorrow.

* Jeremy Hermida (ribs) is available to pinch hit, he says. He hopes to play tomorrow.

* Manny Delcarmen (back) is doubtful for today.

* David Ortiz (wrist) is fine.

*Josh Beckett is in a good mood which Francona took to mean his back was feeling better.

I loved Jacobs Field' date=' but call it by the name it is now.[/quote']

It'll always be the Jake to me and I work for Progressive (hence my 2 trips to Cleveland, otherwise doubt I would ever have gone). I was at the old stadium in 1993 and then the new stadium in 2008.

Damn' date=' I knew Dice couldn't have a 1-2-3 first inning [/quote']

At least he didn't give up any runs!

Why did the Indains sign Branyan? He sucks!!

Don't say anything "he's just like the indains"

Not relevant to the game, but there is a lot of Guardians talk, so I figured I'd mention that the Guardians took Pomeranz. Personally, I think it was a really good pick, probably the best college arm in the draft.
