]I think him working for the Sox prevent him from being objective and challenges his credibility[/b]' date=' but the numbers don't lie. However, the game is played on the field and not on paper, and at the end of the day the team with more runs wins. That being said, despite what these numbers dictate, I'm still taking Jeter over Betancourt, I'm still content with Posada and Cano behind the plate and at second, respectively, and I'm still confident in the team's ability to win. With all of these numbers working against the Yanks last year, they were still able to wrap up a World Championship, so most of these metrics and [i']exotic[/i] stats that are constantly thrown around don't really mean much to me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Bill James a Cardinals fan? He's one of the smartest stat guys in baseball who happens to work for the Red Sox. He doesn't compile all these stats himself, I have a hard time believing he takes the information he gets from people working below him, distorts it and releases it as some form of Red Sox paranoia every year in the most respected statistics book that's released every year without someone taking issue with it.

I don't think any of these statistics are very surprising either. But it does put a damper on some arguments I've heard like "Cano may make errors, but he's great at turning the double play" or "Posada's an underrated defensive catcher".

Nah, you said it right, I was just messing around with you. The term "game" is pretty much used to describe how charismatic guys are with women in the states.

Well they love the accent. It's noticeable, but not like Ozzie Guillen's.

This is a criticism of the Yankees? It was done by a Yankees fan on a Yankees blog.

I agree with that. I was watching hot stove, it was showing UZR stats. It said that Brian Roberts under that stat was ranked as one of the 5 worst second baseman in baseball. Which is bull IMO

How much of Brian Roberts have you watched?

Posted
Plenty of times since he first debuted back in 2001. Offensivley aside' date=' hes really not that bad of a fielder. Cmon one of the 5 worst? The 2009 stats saw him being in the same class as Anderson Hernandez.[/quote']

Yeah, just like Derek Jeter was such a good fielder all those years to people who only saw them occasionally.

Don't discount the stat if you don't know how it works, is what i always say.

Actually I always questioned when Jeter won gold gloves' date=' especially when he won it over Gonzo in 2006[/quote']

It's an example.

My point is that UZR is a pretty reliable stat when it comes to measuring a 2B's defense. If he was bad last year by the stat, he probably was, and checking out his overall numbers it seems he's been declining for awhile now and living on reputation.
