Shocker.

This is why, if you can bring in Gonzalez and Westmoreland is one of the pieces going the other way, you take that.

You know how bad i wanted Gonzales, but i think Westmoreland was not the hold-up to that deal happening.

UPDATE, 8:20 p.m.: It's a cut-down day. Those who have left or are packing include pitchers Casey Kelly, Robert Manuel, Kris Johnson and Adam Mills.

UPDATE, 9:50 a.m.: Other players sent down were Jose Iglesias, Lars Anderson, Kyle Weiland, Luis Exposito, Yamaico Navarro and Ryan Kalish.

By the time I get down there on Saturday, all the top prospects will be gone. I usually like to go down to Ft. Myers for the first or second week. I really wanted to see Lars. Last year he looked totally over-matched and confused. I was hoping to see some signs of progress. His stats sucked this spring, but that doesn't mean that he hasn't made progress.

It's Spring Training.....

I know it's still only spring training.. but Ortiz looks pretty pathetic nonetheless.
That's why they have these games. Players need to get their timing. He'll be fine. The WBC screwed up his prep last year. He needs to be in the lineup every day and get his 3 ABs. By opening day, he'll be fine.

Jed came into the system with as much talent and upside as Pedroia had. It's really a pitty to watch his health whittle that away. First it's the wrist injury, now it turns out he's got Baldelli-itis or something. Seriously sucks, considering what a good shortstop he COULD be if his body would just LET him.

At this point you have to wonder if there mightn't be a curse after all. Uggh.

I still think this kid has a future on this team. But as much as I hate to admit it, it may be time to swallow my pride and admit that that future will probably be on the bench. At the least it would have to start there.

Next up, breaking news on Jose Iglesias' compound femur fracture and its potential significance to the Sox.

I read a story today where the Marlins or the Twins might be interested in Lowell. I think it would be wise for the Red Sox to keep Lowell through the start of the season, to see where Ortiz is as a DH. He had a good hitting day today after a drought through most of ST. You can't tell anyways about veterans in ST,so they won't know until the season starts where Ortiz is as a hitter. Lowell wants to play every day, but the guy is 36 coming off injuries, so he has to accept being a part-time player any place he goes.

If they have to pay most of Lowell's salary to deal him, it makes more sense for them to keep him as DH and 3B/1B insurance. Maybe platoon him at DH with Ortiz if necessary. He will certainly hit LHP better than Ortiz at this point.

Felix Doubront (0.00 ERA)- 5 innings, 2 Hits, Walk, 5 Ks

Think he's got a chance, or has Boof got that last bullpen spot locked up? Personally I think we could really use a second lefty, and our rotation is loaded with Tazawa and Bowden already in the wings, so unless you're looking to dangle Doubront, he might as well be considered a relief prospect.

The Florida Marlins had scouts on hand to watch Mike Lowell's Grapefruit League debut at first base today, writes Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald. Although the club's level of interest in the 36-year-old is unclear, Spencer entertains the notion of a possible reunion between the Marlins and their all-time home run leader.

Bonser's looked filthy. I think the long man spot is his to lose now.

Yes I agree, Bonser is holding his own to have a spot in the pen. For a 2nd lefty in the pen, that would go to Brian Shouse thus far

Boof Bonser

Brian Shouse

Manny Delcarmen

Ramon Ramirez

Hideki Okajima

Daniel Bard

Jonathan Papelbon

Doubront is gonna get another yr of seasoning in the minors. I think he eventually moves to the pen sometime this yr and ends up in Boston

Tazawa and Bowden took a step back upon coming to the bigs last yr. The sox might as well let them recoup their worth, cause right now, they arent worth much. I would consider them emergency depth, but both need to prove that they can maintain their velocity and location in AAA. Bowden scares me the most, since his stuff at the end of the yr was far inferior to where it was at the beginning

Posted
Concerns about Bowden (specially his stamina) are legit. But Tazawa was by all accounts, a rookie to professional baseball. Step back might be a bit harsh, because he wasn't ready to be in the Majors in the first place.
Posted
when Tazawa was signed, he was billed as a low to mid 90s FB guy with 2 plus pitches. When I saw him pitch, he was topping out in the 91-92 range while sitting 89-90 and only had one pitch to write home about, the curve. My thoughts are that he fatigued, but if that is really the kind of pitcher he is, then he was incredibly overhyped.

I don't think his stuff was inferior, I think it was exactly the same. The difference was the big boys got a look at said stuff and found they could consistently hit it for 400 feet. Unless he develops another pitch and some serious movement on his fastball, in my opinion, he's a AAAA pitcher for the rest of his career.

It was his first year as a professional. Different league, different ball, different workload. You're easier to predict than an election with one candidate.

Tazawa has time to develop. Barring several injuries to the Rotation.

Bowden concerns all of us to some extent. I can't find the link, but there was an article on him in the Globe, Herald, or on ESPN Boston where he explained what happened to him last year. If I recall correctly, he said he was not prepared for relief work. He said he'd get up in the 2nd or 3rd to warm-up and then was not ready to go when called to duty innings later. Also, he said that the Sox are working with him on his mechanics. In any case this may be his last shot here. Even though he's still really young. I see him being traded at the deadline. Unless he dominates in Pawtucket.

I suspect YAB has hit it on the head. AAAA and gone.

Predictable Dipre dig.

I never said anything about Tazawa being terrible. I said that by the time he came up, he was definitely not the guy he was billed as. I am chalking that up to fatigue, which is essentially what you are doing when you use the fact that this was his first season as a professional. You gotta stop being a dick to people that you are actually agreeing with. It kinda makes you look like a dumbass.
