If we do indeed take the Lackey signing and then spin off Buccholz and a prospect of great value to SD for Adrain Gonzalez, what if our trade of Mike Lowell with Texas doesn't go through as per a failed physical b/c of the need for surgery on his right thumb? What can we do w/Lowell at that point?

As well it's now mentioned that the Yankees are in contact with Jason Bay. If they Yankees add both Bay and Granderson this offseason to replace Matsui and Damon, I'd say they upgraded on both players. Any thoughts ideas that are out of the box to bring in a quality bat to play 1B and what we can possibly do with Mike Lowell to offset some of the Evil Empire's advances?

Or do we wait for 2010 when Pujols is a FA :D?

Id think that if Gonzalez is acquired Lowell would either share DH time with Ortiz or he'd be traded again for however, much lesser value then someone like Max Ramirez who would of been acquired if Lowell was actually healthy.

Well, it kind of depends on when you could expect Lowell back from thumb surgery. If you can start the season with him relatively healthy, you might still pull a trade off.

Minimal, I'd say. Lowell playing 1B is a potential downgrade of two different positions. I suppose it COULD happen though.

Cross that bridge when they get there.

Pujols has a 2011 option I believe.

Pujols will retire a Cardinal.

He will most likely sign long term with them. Retire? Not sure. Too many unforseen variables down the road.

He's the type of player who i don't see in any other uniform, just like Pettite, Posada, and Jeter.

I have that feeling about players like that as well. But they are athletes, and if they want to play, they will play for whomever will give them a spot.

Besides St. Louis can sign him, and maybe some unforseen financial issue arises and they have to trade him. I think he will be a Cardinal until he retires. Just won't be shocked or appalled if he plays elsewhere before he is done.

I'd concur if it wasn't the Cardinals.

Texas is in the process of changing ownership, and that could be holding up the deal. Though they've had other signings recently.

Lowell isn't a bad guy to have around as insurance if they don't sign Beltre. I understand he looked better at 3B in September, and he can DH. Sometimes mobility injuries take more than a season to get back to normal. Nature doesn't know the length of a baseball season.

I doubt the ownership change has anything to do with the hold up. It's only 3M for next season.

I don't think it's a good idea to expect Lowell to recover more mobility than what he already has. It was major surgery after all.

I wouldn't mind seeing Lowell back, as I've said I prefer him over Beltre if somehow the thumb injury prevents the Rameriz Texas trade from going through. Lowell was productive last year, but Francona mis-managed him and played him in too many games. Like previously said, you have to limit his play in the field. He can DH vs. lefties and have Ortiz benched. Kotchman gets more play at 1stbase, which is a good thing b/c he could be defensively better at the position than Youkilis.

Kotchman is nowhere near as good defensively as Kevin Youkilis. Youk is a top five defensive first baseman as we speak, his combination of range and throwing arm is one Kotchman can only dream of having. I'm not trying to be a dick or anything, but Kotchman isn't even close to Youk defensively.
