Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times has heard that free agent outfielder Jason Bay will "stand on his head" to play for the Mariners.

Bay is from British Columbia, the Canadian province just north of Seattle, and would like to get closer to home. The M's have already expressed interest despite his lacking defense, so talks have the potential to run smoothly. That said, the Red Sox still have interest in bringing him back and could probably outbid the Mariners if they truly want to retain the outfielder.

the Sox could outbid the Mariners and keep Bay if the Sox wanted him back and $$$ is what Bay is looking for. But if he really keeps to his promise of wanting to be closer to home, and the M's offer him a fair deal compared to what he is looking for, Bay is gone.

I really thought this was a very obvious fit with all things considered. I only wonder why it took so long to gather steam in the media.

Bay and Figgins could possibly put the Mariners in contention in that division, assuming they get Washburn back and add another SP.

I agree that the M's could contend this year. I also agree they need to add some starting pitching, I just don't see them going out and signing Washburn again after trading him during the season. stranger things have happened though.
