Sources have indicated to Phil Rogers of The Chicago Tribune that commissioner Bud Selig plans to step down after the 2012 season, when his contract is up. The current CBA expires after the 2011 season, so negotiating the next pact will likely be Selig's last act as baseball's commissioner.

idk why Selig takes so much s*** from people. I honestly think he's done very well during his tenure as commissioner. Sure, he's had his faults; 2002 ASG tie, steroid era, cancellation of the '94 series, etc. But he's done a lot of good things for the game too. Interleague play, wild card, record attendence and revenues (400% increase), luxury tax, revenue sharing, avoiding the lockout/strike in 2002, limited use of replays, WBC, merging of AL and NL operations, Mitchell report and steroid testing, 18 new stadiums (19 counting Target Field), etc. Sure there's been some shady dealings surrounding him over the years, but I truly feel he always had the best interest of baseball in mind. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I feel Selig is one of the best commissioners in the history of the game. I wouldn't oppose his election to the HOF either. IMO his replacement following the 2012 season has some big shoes to fill.

Selig has had his pro's and con's, but overall hasn't done a bad job.

MLB needs to find a "Goddell" type replacement. Someone who is not afraid of modernizing the game so to speak. I'm not talking huge changes, just minor tweakings.

1. Expansion of replay.

What type of changes would we be talking about? Seriouly, not to be a dick but I am curious what everybody here would change about baseball if they were commissioner. I know I personally wouldn't change much.

Playoff umpiring, lol.

Fair enough, but that's a different story that needs to be addressed with the Umpires Association. The umpiring system has been the same for years and never before garnered as much criticism as this year.

I don't know, they were pretty bad the year they installed replay.

Raise the mound back to where it used to be. - It would help pitchers which would be even more helpful when I:

Add the DH to the National League. - it's just getting stupid now. I know, "it's a different, better game" with the pitcher batting. Problem is it makes for a more boring game, limits older great hitters from continuing as a DH and reduces the NL to second class when it comes to offense. Besides, what? 1 out of every 8 pitchers can actually do something with a bat? It's an old idea that should just go away already.

Get rid of or at least shorted inter league play. - 5 weeks of it is just too damn long. f*** the Padres.

No baseball in November ever again. - too many damn off days in the playoffs. Games should be back to back with 2 days off for travel and 1 before game 5.

Shorten Spring Training. - God please. Chop off 2 weeks.

Remove the WS home field from the All Star Game. - I originally liked the idea, but it really is dumb. The game means nothing anymore, and you know what, get rid of it too. Just have the dumb HR Derby instead. And it should mean NOTHING to the playoffs.

Enforce a salary cap instead of a tax. - I don't think the tax works. I just don't. The Yanks will spend whatever they want and the cheapy teams will spend whatever they don't want. The only teams that benefit are mid level teams who have a tiny chance to do anything in the playoffs. And even when those teams do make the playoffs, they usually unload salary the next year anyway.

Enforce a salary floor and tax the hell outa teams who don't spend up to it. - f*** the Royals.

Get rid of the wbc and push for Baseball in the Olympics instead. - Of course that would require REAL doping tests, so it will never happen. But this is another byproduct of Bud's terrible tenure.

Yes Bud made the leagues stronger. Tons stronger. He made the owners extremely rich along the way, and thus the players. The only problem he created was for the fans who have to pay a small fortune to go to the new stadium, to watch an All Star game that ends tied, and help wipe away records that were once held sacred. So for people who like(d) the history of the game, the accomplishments going back over 100 years, who thought it was on the up and up, or at least slightly - Bud failed us in so many ways I'm surprised his last name isn't Bush.

f*** Bud.

f*** Bud.

All good ideas. I disagree with your opinion that the NL games are more boring without the DH, in fact I feel the exact opposite. I think games without the DH are more exciting, there's a lot more strategy involved. But I understand your feelings.

I would have no problem shortening interleague play, but I would also like to keep the interleague games within a certain time period, instead of playing 1 interleague series in may, then 3 or 4 series against teams in your own league, then another 2 interleague series in a row, etc. Play all the interleague games back to back, no breaks. I understand that's not possible in the NL being that they have 2 more teams than the AL, but that should be the only exception.

I agree no baseball in November, and shortening Spring training by a week or 2 isn't a bad idea too. Also, start the games earlier instead of 2-3 weeks of workouts before exhibition games start. most teams report the week of Valentines Day but games don't start until the end of Feb/beginning of March.

I don't mind too much about the ASG determining Home Field, but I wouldn't be against changing that. An exhibition game shouldn't have such high stakes. I do like the game though and wouldn't want to get rid of it altogether.

Salary cap is tricky, but if it could be done RIGHT then it's worth exploring. I very much like the idea of a salary floor. If there's gonna be a maximum a team can spend then there should also be a minimum.

I love the WBC and wouldn't get rid of it, but I would change the timing that way it doesn't interfere with Spring Training. Play it either before Spring Training or after the World Series. As for the Olympics, Baseball needs to be reinstated, but how would you go about allowing Major Leaguers to participate? Would you put the season on hold or work out some kind of system where each team can only send x number of players?

Posted
Ok then, as an American Leaguer, born and raised (I was born in 1973), as Commish I would allow the NL to allow the pitcher to continue to hit. But in the World Series, you're on your own. The DH will be part of the AL team and the NL can do what they want with the pitchers spot. All 7 games.

IMO there's only one man that should take this job but I doubt it'll ever happen:

George W. Bush

LOL man I liked W, and it might even raise the prestige of the game to put a former President in charge of the league, but it still won't happen.

Posted
I don't hate W. as much as most of the country does, but having him take over as comissioner would make the league a laughingstock, unfortunately. Despite the job he does.

Maybe add a day game to the WS. Change the starting times to reasonable times, it be nice if the kids growing up could see the end of a game. Do not let the f***ing WS run into November(absolutely ridiculous). Mandatory double headers(4-5 a year), that should help shorten up the season. A "floating" cap. Instant replay needs to be expanded. And get rid of the " Gentlemen" group crap with the Owners. If Mark Cuban wants to be an owner, baseball should be jumping at the opportunity. Sports need more owners like him :D

Like I said not much.

I don't get why everybody is so upset that the World Series ran into November. What is the big difference between it ending on one of the last days of October, as opposed to sometime during the first week of November? It's really not that big of a deal, just because the month changes.

The only changes I would like to see are a hard slotting system for the draft, expansion of instant replay, and the elimination of the neighborhood call.

Whatever else happens in regards to the financial state of the game (salary cap, salary floor, increased luxury tax, etc.), it's fine by me. There seems to be no perfect solution, and there are legitimate arguments for all sides.

Definitely a World Series day game. Definitely TRY and implement double-headers, though the owners would have a fit. Maybe a compromise of day/night separate admission doubleheaders would work so that the owners don't lose the revenue, and the players get extra days off.
