The only position where you don't need much range but steady hands is 1B (besides catcher).

Mike Lowell could be a fantastic defensive 1B and i don't see any logical reason that would state otherwise.

he plays short hope really well on hard hit balls to third but a throw is gonna be a lot easier. he will be a really good first baseman.

 

He can still hit if he plays on a consistent basis.

You are right. By VORP by position in 2009, he would rank 17th out of 30 1B.
