George Kottaras released by Red Sox: The Red Sox released reserve catcher George Kottaras. With Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek under contract next season and Dusty Brown working his way up from the minor leagues, they had little use for Kottaras.

(Updated 11/17/2009).

With Tek coming back as the backup, I knew he was all but gone. The Sox weren't going to carry three catchers. Brown is working his way up and Expositio is still a ways away, but I think the future is bright for him. Anyway, I think Kottras will end up as backup somewhere on a Major League roster.

Not too surprising really, the writing was on the wall when Tek picked up his option.

Kinda disappointing that we couldn't have found a way to hold onto him. He might not be the complete package, but he had some very useful skills in a catcher. I was kind of hoping they'd cut Dusty Brown and find a way to crowd Kottaras into AAA but I guess I can understand why that couldn't happen.

He'll probably stick somewhere in the big leagues. Catchers with Kottaras' power potential are too hard to find for me to think he won't get another chance in a place like KC or Cincy.

Bill Hasselman and Mike Stanely FTW
Stanley was a much better hitter than Kottaras will ever be. Kottaras will have a career arc similar to Gary Allenson. He stunk too.
