He was brought in because he was a moneyball guy but the thing with them is that they are not likely to win WS. Ricciardi's first few years there he was playing "money ball" baseball like Beane did/does with the A's but the Rogers family didn't like that so they wanted him to go wild with money.

Ricciardi is a good baseball mind but I don't think he should be the one calling the final shots on such things as free agents or drafting. Maybe Beane will take him back to the A's org.

Riccardi sucks. But I would imagine he gets work elsewhere. Which teams GM spots may be opening up? I'm sure ends up somewhere, maybe not as a GM, but somewhere in the FO.

Surely Cincy will have an opening - Walt Jocketty is so bad it can't be put into words. San Diego just fired Towers so there's another opening.

I'd imagine he ends up back in Oakland with Billy. San Diego might also be a possibility, since an ex-apprentice of Beane's (Paul Depodesta) has a front office job there, so there might be a small Moneyball reunion. Who knows.

Good post, basically what I was going to say. In Oakland, he was in a system that preached (or was forced to) spend as little as possible for underrated players. Once the owners in Toronto gave him money to work with, he went hog wild and spent it wrong.

The same Walt Jocketty that won a World Series and was extremely successful in St. Louis?

Yes, that guy. He quickly flamed out in St. Louis and doesn't appear to have the magic touch in Cincy either. What kind of a GM signs Kip Wells, the worst pitcher in MLB, with the Cardinals, only to see how atrocious he is, and signs him with the Reds two years later? I think Jocketty is horrible. Heck, most Cardinal fans re-joiced when he left St. Louis.

I'm curious to see if the GM switches in Toronto and San Diego impact Theo's ability to swing a deal for Halladay or Adrian Gonzalez, two players I imagine he's still interested in acquiring going into the offseason.

I'm skeptical of the idea that a new GM, being brought in to replace the previous GM who couldn't build a winner, is going to be interested in trading away his best player in his first offseason.

It would certainly take some guts to make a move like that. That would be a way to guarantee that the fans judged a GM by one thing and one alone -- the outcome of that trade.

the only situation where that makes any real sense is Toronto, mostly because they won't keep Halladay much longder anyway.

The question is will the Jays ownership decide to let the inmates run the assylum.

They have already said that Gatson will be there all year next year. Take that for what its worth though because if them bomb like Baltimore and are way below 500, I could see Gaston gone WAY before the year ends.

Every manager has made his share of bad moves. However, overall, they have to be judged based on their team success, in my opinion. Jocketty built those Cardinal teams.

Pat Gillick has made his share of more moves. Are you going to call him a bad GM?
