On the other hand, it'd leave the Yankees back on their heels and facing the Angels in the postseason. That might be worth aiming for.

The Red Sox are not going to make any decisions based on the premise of trying to pit the Yankees up against the Angels in the first round. They are going to do what is best for themselves, whether they think it's trying to win the division or resting players.

well of course, but if you don't think the Sox are watching the division race at this point... well, I believe you're wrong.

When did I say they weren't watching the divisional race? I just don't think they really care who the Yankees' play in the first round.

I think the Sox will do everything they can to win against the Royals and the Yankees, and then see where they stand after this week. At that point they'll make a decision about how hard to go for it over the final week.

I think it's best to play laizzae fair the next couple of games, if we win go for division, if not, rest players. But getting home field advantage in the playoffs is a great thing. Either way, we're still in.

If the Angels don't at least get 2 games from the Yanks we are not winning the division. So at that point we can rest players and set up our rotation.

His FIP is still near a run higher than his ERA, which might be a better indicator.

Jackson has definitely benefited from from Detroit's defense and their home park, but with all external factors aside, let me ask again:

Is Edwin Jackson really a #2 starter for a playoff team?

Detroit's defense is not very good, especially in the outfield.

Granderson is good but the corner outfielders suck, which is part of the explanation for Washburn's regression, he left the best defensive OF in the majors for one of the worst.

As for this thread, I think the Sox should go balls out until Friday. If they are 4 games or less out come Friday, go for the division. Any more, ease off the gas.

Wouldn't it also put the Sox in an awkward position? If they can't get to within a game with a sweep this weekend, ease off and set yourself up for the first round.

It is in the infield with the exception of Cabrera, and he's about league average.

The AL Central team has a very good chance of losing as soon as they get into the post season. It's just not a great division this year.

Washburn's an extreme FB pitcher though.

I was talking about Washburn?

Then we weren't on the same page.

I'm sorry, i thought you were responding to my "Jackson's really not that good" statement which got Doiji's panties in a bunch.

Detroit is a pitchers paradise, even more so than in Seattle and the loss of Washburn really hurts them.

Sox blew an easy chance to pick up a game on NY last night by blowing 2 6 run leads, awful is a word thrown around far too often, their pitching was awful, a 6 run lead and tossing 7 bb's will get you DFA'd rather quickly in this league and Wake was toast after the rain.

The vaunted bullpen has some serious questions these days. Delcarmen isnt getting anyone out and Dan Bard has hit the proverbial wall, he too is struggling as is Ramirez, the Wagner deal has been a lifesaver.Wake is hurting, the guy took 10 seconds to get to home plate on that wild pitch and he runs as if hes carrying Cecil Fielder on his back, too bad cause NY continues to fail against the Angels and are now 5-18 in their last 23 against the Halo's....

This statement is false.

Both HR per game and park factor have Comerica labeled as an "average" offensive ballpark, while Safeco is ranked as the worst park for offense in the AL, couple that with the fact that Seattle has a better OF defense than Detroit, and the statement is just plain wrong.

Washburn is worse than Tim Wakefield who's also bad. Detroit is not a threat; still I hope they beat the Yanks in the first round. However, it's all a pipe dream because I doubt it happening.

I feel the same way, but I also feel like what kind of playoffs would it be without Sox vs Yanks?

I know, but when the Yankees' success scares the heck out of Red Sox fans, you kind of start to understand not playing the Yanks.

Wait... I thought we were supposed to be rooting FOR the Yankees. Now we have to root AGAINST them again?

Make up your minds, would ya...?

You don't need to fear the yankees. I don't fear the red sox. I actually hope we run into each other again in the playoffs' date=' cause that means we wont have to play Anaheim.[/quote']

That's the team i really don't wanna face, and i'm pretty sure it's the team Yanks fan don't wanna face either.

In order to beat Anaheim, we need it to be a 7 game set and we need home field. And I still think that isnt enough. You really dont understand, I want the sox to face Anaheim and I will actually have to pull for Boston. We suck in Anaheim and they play us tough at home, so I'd much rather play Boston.
