About time to start thinking about such things. Beckett and Lester are givens, but after them it gets a little murky.

Buchholz is presumably the #3 at the moment, but who's the #4? Do we use a #4? And does this change if Daisuke comes back healthy and/or Buchholz struggles? With the acquisition by our likely ALDS rivals of Kazmir, I'd like to hope we get an answer to that soon.

In the ALDS, we might be able to get by with just 3 starters. Depending on what schedule the Yankees (the likely top seed) choose.

Beyond that, I'd go with Tazawa if he produces somewhat well the rest of the year. The only really bad start I can remember him having was the White Sox game.

He listed Buchholz as the #3.

My bad, I misread his original post. I have absolutely no clue who it could be. If he's healthy enough, it'll probably end up being Wakefield

Becket-Lester-Buchholz is the front three. Assuming the Yankees finish with the best record and choose the eight day series, then the Sox get the seven day. This means that with a three man rotation, the G1 starter gets three days rest to start G4, and the G2 starter gets four days rest to start G5. I think you go with the three man rotation in the LDS.

If the Sox get to the ALCS, they could manage a three man rotation again if they're willing to go with the G1 starter on three days rest for G4. That's the only circumstance in which short rest would be required.

If they go with the 4 man for either series, I think it's too early to tell who the #4 is. Nobody is standing out right now. Wake is hurt, Dice-K hasn't come back yet, it's much too early to form a judgment on Byrd, and Tazawa has been unreliable and is the definition of inexperienced.

The problem is, Beckett hasn't started on short rest since 2004, and Lester has only done it once, in April of last year. Wakefield could do it if he's healthy, but he would at most be the No. 4 guy in the rotation for the playoffs.

Tito is very conservative with his starting pitching, even in the postseason. I don't think he'd throw anybody on short rest unless he had no other choice (like Game 7 of the '04 ALCS).

Dice-K had a rocky 1st inning yesterday for the sea dogs, but got the side out in order the 2nd inning before leaving. He might be OK.

If Beckett isn't sharp for the playoffs, the no.3 starter will be a moot point. They won't go far. If Beckett is sharp, a sharp Dice-K or Buchholz would greatly improve their chances.

The Yankees have been riding high since the all-star break, doing almost nothing wrong. I wonder if they can maintain that into the playoffs. All teams have ups and downs. And then there's injuries...

If buchholz finishes the season out strong, i really think he'll get a chance at the number 3 starter. The only way i see it not happening if he sucks here on out or Dice-K come back and pitches like his old self.
