A setback for Wakefield

Posted by Amalie Benjamin, Globe Staff August 29, 2009 04:25 PM

Tim Wakefield has been scratched from his scheduled start Monday against the Rays because his back is acting up. He will be evaluated on Monday.

Wakefield's absence, as well as the possibility of a rainout tonight, throw a serious wrench into the Red Sox rotation for the next few days. Here's what we know at the moment:

Tonight: Clay Buchholz

Sunday: TBA (Buccholz will start if tonight's game is rained out)

Monday: TBA

Tuesday: Jon Lester

Paul Byrd, who last pitched on Tuesday, is a prime candidate to start tomorrow if tonight's game is played.

We have a spot left on the 40-man roster. Could Adam Mills be a candidate? He's pretty much the heir to David Pauley anyway, might as well start using him that way.

Fernando Cabrera and Javier Lopez are probably more likely to be called up.

Kottaras will take one spot on Sept 1st, and one of those two will occupy the other one until Dice-K gets back.

EDIT* Kottaras is already on the 40 man. I still don't see Adam Mills getting the call.

I was under the impression that since Fernando Cabrera and Javier Lopez have played in the big leagues this season that both are on the 40-man roster.

They both cleared waivers.

Wakefield: 'I got out of bed, I couldn't even stand up straight'

Tim Wakefield will get a cortisone injection tomorrow to fend of lingering pain in his lower back. Talking to reporters before this afternoon’s game, he said he was surprised to have the pain return after initially feeling the discomfort in July. He said the pain struck in the middle of his start Wednesday against the White Sox, a 3-2 win.

“I felt it during the game, like in the third inning,” he said. “I felt my hip kind of cramp up, but I was able to kind of pitch through it, I think 'cause of the adrenaline, and I was warm and everything. The next day it was just sore. Then just the same symptoms as

it was in Texas, it was just getting worse and worse.

“I don't think there's anything I did during the game that would provoke this injury to come back or the feeling that I had to come back. There's a fragmented piece that's floating in there, like a bone spur. It's irritating in there, and it's a matter of getting that to the right position where it's not going to bother me anymore. Hopefully the cortisone shot will do that.”

Wakefield said that if the shot works he hopes to be pitching in about a week.

“I think we're going to be a little bit more aggressive with it this time than last time," he said. "I get the shot Monday, maybe start playing catch on Wednesday, and see how it feels. Doesn't feel good, then we'll wait another day, and then make a decision then."

Unable to get the 43-year-old pitcher any treatment with clinics being closed over the weekend, Sox manager Terry Francona sent Wakefield home yesterday.

“What we did last night was we actually sent him home before the game,” Francona said. “We wanted to get him medicated and not driving. So we sent him home and I have not seen him yet this morning. He’s all set tomorrow to go get looked at and do what we need to do.”

Wakefield said he was feeling better today.

“Yesterday, it was pretty bad,” he said. “I got out of bed, I couldn't even stand up straight. It's a cause of concern when I called and told them that, I had told them the day before that I'd try my best to make the start on Tuesday, but I don't know in my mind that I thought I could do it Thursday. Friday came around it's gotten worse, I don't know if I can make it. Then made the decision yesterday to skip my start and hopefully I can slide back in there in the next week or so."

Taking the mound for the first time since July 8, Wakefield tossed seven strong innings, allowing just one run on six hits in a 3-2 win over the White Sox.

“It's tough to not be able to contribute like I want to,” Wakefield said. “I'm doing the best

I can to try to get back on the field as fast as possible because I know they're running out of time. We're in the middle of a pennant race here. Along with our training staff, the doctors, I'm doing what I can to try to get back out there.”

Wakefield acknowledged that the possibility of surgery looms over him in the offseason.

“I think surgery is inevitable in this situation,” he said. “It's not a complete disc-ectomy. I think it's a situation where they're going to have to go in there and just pull that spur out or that piece out. I think that in itself will relieve a lot of the symptoms, and you know it's not a huge deal where I'm going to be on the shelf rehabbing for two months. It's more of a two-week type thing, let the wound of the surgery heal up, and we're ready to go … ”

“We'll have to get some more information on it, but probably yes. I mean I'm going to try to avoid it as much as possible. If the symptoms are gone by the end of the season and we do an MRI and it's not there anymore then I would say it's not going to happen.”

Heck, Wake is just a 40 year old guy with a 60 year old back. He probably slept on his stomach and woke up to a rainy day. That will do it. Maybe a touch of arthritis in one of his lower disks. I hope he is taking his glucosamine. And sleeping on his back. Seriously.

Wakefield to skip a start

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff September 7, 2009 12:50 PM

CHICAGO - Terry Francona announced to day that Tim Wakefield will be "re-assessed" when the team returns to Boston tomorrow. Right now Francona said they're penciling Wakefield in for the Baltimore series at Camden Yards which doesn't begin until September 19th, but even that is up in the air.

Francona said Wakefield has suffered no setback to his balky back and calf, and actually seemed better than between his last start when Wakefield had to have another cortisone shot. But the Red Sox feel at this point that Wakefield needs to skip a start.

"When I say re-assess that's basically what we're going to do," Francona said. "Instead of him going out and throwing a side we'll take a deep breath and we'll kind of see what to do. We have him penciled in down in Baltimore but having said that we're going to talk to Tom (Dr. Tom Gill) and figure out whether he can pitch every 10 days or whether that's doing him a disservice. We're kind of stuck in the middle and he is too. There's a lot of gray area here and we really don't know."

Francona added, "I think he felt a little bit better this time than he felt last time. You guys see what we're seeing (limping) and probably more for us because we're around him. It's hard because he goes out and throws seven innings two times (six once)."

Wait, so nothing is wrong with Wakefield's back. Nothing at all. They just felt he needed to skip a start in the final month of a playoff race that they are currently 2 games up on in the L column. And knowing that the guy they put in his spot will likely lay an egg. Can they ******** any more through the media?

this is the lolwut. They are skipping his start and keeping his start on 9/19 up in the air. Yet he is making progress and not being set back? You dont be "careful" with a 40 yr old pitcher in theoretically, the last yr of his deal. You ride the horse until he bucks. This sounds like the sox are downplaying his injury.

No one. There is an off day in the schedule.

it looks like you're right

Lester is schedualed to pitch on friday when before he was to pitch saturday

Hopefully Beckett will pitch saturday cause I'm going to that game and there's no way in hell I want to see Tawaza or someone else pitch

Wake is getting another cortisone shot tomorrow

Which is a "shot" in the dark.

He needs to have the antagonist bone spur surgically removed and needs to recover while strengthening his back . He's done for this year. And may be done period. I hope he can come back next year. But waiting to do the procedure only increases the likelihood that he won't make it back.

Under the knife now Gill.

Dope.

They could be downplaying his injury, or they are trying to rest him so he could be the team's #4 starter in the playoffs should Dice-K suck. They shouldn't "ride the horse until he bucks" if they need that horse to pitch in the playoffs.
