Matt Holliday isn't the only hot-hitting deadline acquisition open to signing long-term with his new club. Victor Martinez tells Rob Bradford of WEEI.com that he'd consider signing an extension with the Red Sox.

"Definitely," Martinez said. "Who wouldn't want to play here in Boston? It's up to them, but from my side, I would want to stay here."

That's a good sign:D

If you can get him on a 3-4 year extension that's great. I'm not keen to sign a catcher much past age 35 though

4 years 45-50M? Would that be enough to get it done?

if you can sign him through age 35 you almost have to do it. He should be productive that long at least. And it'll take us out of the ridiculous Joe Mauer sweepstakes that will ensue if the guy doesn't sign with Minnesota soon.

Nope because they could move him to 1B/DH and Youk to 3B permanently after next season when Lowell contracts up. The sign Mauer to Catch. That's a awesome 3-4 combo.

The Red Sox need to be in on Mauer regardless.

Not really. There's no in-house replacement for Lowell besides Youkilis which would then leave a hole at first most likely occupied by Martinez. Then you have a hole at catcher and DH.

VMart at 10 mil a yr likely wont get it done at least right now. He still has the leverage to consider himself a catcher. If the sox effectively move him off the position for 2010, then his leverage drops as his offensive production is about average for a 1B and then 10 mil a season might be too much.

All dependent on the amount of years offered, Mr. Stormcloud

That sounds good... Hopefully the Sox extend his contract.

As it always does. I am just saying, a catcher with his offensive numbers is worth a hell of a lot more than a 1b with his offensive #s.

I'd be happy with 5/55 or 5/60, and I imagine Mr. Martinez would as well. He's got the bat to carry that kind of salary and he should be at least a decent near-term solution as a catcher.

I want no part of Mauer. Doe one thing, as a catcher with his offensive ability he'll break records. Second between the two of him and VMart, I'd consider Mauer the player I moved to first base. Yes, even with his mad skills at catcher, the guy is simply too bulky to age well behind the plate IMHO. And I'd want a bat like that away from that kind of wear and tear. The first time he hit the DL for a knee related problem would be the beginning of the end.

He's not a C or a 1B, he's a C/1B, and that's how he will be signed.

Extend VMart and finagle a deal for Carlos Beltran from the cash-strapped Mets and our offseason would be halfway over before it began.

Actually if VMart would let me get away with it I'd rather frontload the deal. Pay him more in the years he's most likely to be a catcher and by the time it's time to move him to first his remaining contract load is reasonable for the 1B he'll be.

The dollar will suffer from double digit inflation rates in four to five years time. By backloading the deal, you could essentially get Martinez for a massive bargain.

If that happens baseball goes way down on my list of priorities so I don't faintly care.. Besides, if VMart's financial advisors are aware of that they'd want the money frontloaded anyway so he can turn it into things before the crash hits.

Boras and Teixeira signed a deal that was backloaded.

I just don't think it happens guys. I think that both Minnesota and NYY have advantages on us in the Mauer sweepstakes.

Probably, but we can hope.

Yeah my dream of frontloading is more borne from hockey, where because of the cap deals do tend to be frontloaded giving more cap space as the deal goes forward.

I think he re-ups with the Twins. But I'd like the Sox to make a concerted effort to sign him never the less.
