Why not?

The deal seems fine from a talent standpoint, but Santana is about to have surgery and Beltran is a little on the older side.

If we're going to really splurge on someone (and lets be honest that deal empties a good portion of the high-upside guys who are actually performing) then I'd rather they take that deal to Florida (Hanley) or Seattle (Felix) so we can get someone who's younger and significantly less expensive (allows us to use the resources elsewhere).

How many of you would give up a package of Bowden' date=' Tazawa, Kalish, Exposito and Reddick for Santana and Beltran?[/quote']

This is a terrible deal for the Mets. However, Minaya is the GM, anything is possible.

Posted
I would imagine if Reyes, Wright or Beltran became available for financial reason the Red Sox would look in on it.

Beltran- 10:$18.5M, 11:$18.5M, NTC

Wright- 10:$10M, 11:$14M, 12:$15M,

13:$16M club option ($1M buyout)

Reyes- 10:$9M,

11:$11M club option ($0.5M buyout)

They all make a decent amount. Who knows they could become available.

It's easy to use logic.

Reyes is cheap, Wright is cheap, and Santana is basically their entire starting rotation.

Why the f*** would they trade any of them?

There not albatross contracts. But for a team that is financially strapped those could seem like big $ deals.

Really?

If the Mets get out of one of Beltran/Santana, combined with Delgado walking as a FA, trading either of them is stupid.

Ellsbury shouldn't stand in the way of Beltran.

Agreed. I'd trade a good package for either Beltran or Santana. For both, I blow the bank.

Posted

The same Beltran who needs micro fracture knee surgery?

In no way outside of Grady Sizemore should Ellsbury be replaced. He has had a very good season. His Defense in CF is upper echelon. And he reeks havoc on the base paths. I really thought the trade thoughts about him would have cooled a little. I wouldn't mind Beltran in LF, RF, DH though. If it means Jacoby then pass. I'd rather have him in CF for the next 4+ years. Beltrans will be a COF/DH soon if his knee keeps acting up.

I think Beltran with his injury concerns and big $(if the Mets are in dumping mode) could be had for a decent price. Bowden+OF+low level types is a solid offer. If healthy, Beltran would be very good in the Sox line up.

Beltran for Ellsbury (among other players) or Beltran for Bard (among other players?)

Assume that the "other players" are constant.

Posted

Neither.

They need to figure out what they are doing with Papelbon before adding Bard to any deal IMO.

If They are going with Papelbon for the long haul(offering him a BIG deal) then Bard should be expendable. If they trade Papelbon, Bard becomes untouchable.

I think they can build a deal around Bowden++ and have it be a good offer.

Now THAT would be an interesting trade. Papelbon as part of a Beltran deal. Pretty sure the Mets don't go for it though. The last thing a cash-strapped team needs is expensive relief pitching.

Wagner looking forward to joining Sox

Posted by Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff August 26, 2009 06:00 PM

Billy Wagner will get here tomorrow, but the newest Sox said from his home in Virginia moments ago he's excited about joining the Red Sox and the pennant race.

"Really Boston is a team I always wanted to play for," said Wagner. "I saw my first big league game in Boston when I played for Brewster in the Cape Cod League and I can still see the seat where I sat. It'll be neat to see it when I get there."

Wagner said he never didn't want to come to Boston. He just felt uncertainty about his rehab from Tommy John surgery because he wasn't far into his comeback. The other thing was the fact he wanted a chance, if his elbow remains sound, to get 400 saves in his career and he won't do it in Boston because "they have a very good closer."

"I'd just like to have the opportunity, if I'm able, to reach that goal. After playing in the league this long, that means a lot to me. It would be right for me to come in here and say 'I should be closing here' because that's not the case. Boston has one of the best closers in baseball. I just want to come in here and contribute to a World Series championship in any way I can."

Wagner said he's 11 months into what is normally a 14-month process and while he said he feels great and is progressing well, he admitted part of his initial apprehension was not wanting to let the Red Sox down by not being able to pitch enough. Wagner admits he can't pitch everyday.

"After speaking to Tito and Theo I realize that they'll make sure I'm used the right way and that I can continue to get stronger and stronger. They've taken the pressure off. I'm a competitive person and the way I was I wanted to pitch everyday, but I know I can't pitch everyday anymore."

Wagner said he heard the comments about Eric Gagne and how he didn't live up to his billing when he came. He certainly doesn't want to be that.

"The Red sox took a leap of faith with me. They saw me for two innings and they took a chance on me."

Asked whether he'll be OK with Jonathan Papelbon after the Sox closer originally made comments that Wagner's presence might cause a disruption to roles in the pen, "I understand exactly what he's talking about. He's protecting his guys out there. I remember being in a situation in Houston where the same kind of thing happened. But things work out. It's going to be an honor for me to play with these guys. The Red Sox have a great bullpen and I certainly don't want to come in and make it worse. I don't want to be a headache to anyone. I want to make it better."

Haha no I mean deal Papelbon in a separate trade. Not to the Mets. Sorry

No no, I got that, I was just putting the thoughts together.

Sounds like a guy saying a lot of "the right things" to me.

In other words, catch phrases being distributed in lieu of anything seriously intended to convey meaning.

Careful, ORS doesn't like that sort of thinking.;)

He could have done a lot worse. As far as the guys in the pen go, pitch well and you won't have to worry about him:D

No not at all. I was only making a joke.

Frankly, is there anything either BSN07 or I can say that will provoke ORS into NOT responding in an antagonistic manner? If there is I'd love to know what it is.

I can tell you that what you wrote is exactly not it.

but if there's nothing I can do to keep the guy from being rude, offensive and insulting every time he responds to my posts, there's a point where it stops being worth it to try.

if he's gonna be a jerk no matter what I do I might as well get my licks in, know what I mean?

If he's going to be a jerk for no reason, it will be noted as such. But you don't help the issue with "getting in your licks", you just throw gasoline on it.

I am now going to say that I really don't want ORS to respond to any of it because then it will just confirm what I know is going to happen and I just don't want it to happen. Kthxconversationover.

Just so you know, when you make a joke at someone's expense, you should expect the antagonization to be returned. Whether or not you "want" it is irrelevant, because you should expect it.

SOTK asked we drop it. I have and will continue to do so. You get a second chance to heed the mod's request, I'd consider myself lucky if I were you.

Fair enough I suppose.

I was trying to say it was more of a "poke in the ribs type joke", then a "trying to drag you back into an argument joke".

I understand that, but after the argument you just got in, you can't really add a tone to your words on the internet. I read it as slightly antagonistic, even though I'm sure that's not how you meant it.
