How do you see next years teams rotation? Obviously Penny will be gone, and we know Smoltz has already been cut. So, who takes over all these spots next year?

1) Beckett - Lock

2) Lester - Lock.

3) Matsuzaka - Lock (Some might see it differently, but I think he stays).

4) Wakefield - I think he returns for yet another season, and I'm fine with this.

5) Buchholz - Gets his shot at 30 starts.

And then I think they'll have Bowden be the Buchholz of next year - Give him the spot starts when needed, and overall, give him about 5-10 starts.

I think they also go out and sign one Penny-esque starter, but not give him the same opportunity as Penny. Things would also get super interesting if Wakefield decided to retire. Do the Sox go make a big splash trade with Halladay, or let someone like Bowden get 30 starts?

because we're getting curb stomped by the Yankees -- which happens every year in the second half of the season -- and so certain of the less veteran fans around here are starting to panic about how the season is over.

Honestly I'd be more nervous if we DID dominate the yankees for an entire season, espcially if there was no reason for it. That would break the pattern, you see.

Does tazawa have any chance to be in the starting rotation next year?

if he is, it's because something went very wrong IMO

Kelvim Escobar is my nominee for the Penny/Smoltz recovery option. Not because I particularly like him, but given the FO's prediliction for doing those type of moves, I see it happening.

Escobar is interesting, I'd like Theo to look into it myself, but my vote is to spend a little more money and go for Erik Bedard.

Beclett

Lester

Bedard

Matsuzaka

Buchholz.

Nasty. And we have the depth to deal with it if Bedard can't stay healthy.

That word makes me cringe.

Bedard has a torn lebrum and with hs injury histroy I would not touch him. Same thing with Escobar who hasn't stayed healthy in recent years. A name that sticks out too me for a reclamtion project is Justin Duchscherer from the A's. He has a minor elbow problem and slight emtional problems but I think he could be a decent 4th option. He went 10-8 with a 2.52 ERA in 2008 and I think he could be one of these guys that you could plug in and get some major production from.

Felix Hernandez is not definitely available. I'd rather talk about FA's than pipedream trades.

Dead on.. The whole talk about Felix Hernandez is in all ways a pipe dream. The Red Sox called the Mariners at the trade deadline and told the Mariners they could have any 5 prospects including Bard and Kelly and were still turned down. Hernandez is a once in the blue moon talent who will be a top of the rotation starters for years and years to come. The Mariners are not trading him period.

I'm sick of these reclamation projects, we've had 2 this year already that haven't worked out: Smoltz and Penny. Let's go after someone who can actually contribute consistently and adequately.

Remember how much 'depth' we had at the beginning of this season? Half of our depth has been released and is pitching for St. Louis and the other half just stretched his ******* out like silly putty for the Yankees. We have about as much depth as the inflatable pool at the handicapped day-care.

That falls in line with how the team likes a reclamation project or two.

I agree also Bedard will fall into this category as well.

Anyone see them taking a chance with Harden?

Also if AZ doesn't pick up Webb's option, I can see them trying to bring him in as well.

Any deal involving Hernandez includes Buchholz.

Buchholz+Tazawa++++

I agree Felix is a long shot. But it would be the move of the off season.

Beckett

Lester

Webb/Harden/Bedard/Escobar/Felix

Dice-K

Wake/Buchholz

Pretty solid pitching staff.

Oh and as far as Lackey goes, he wouldn't be a bad pick up. But his numbers at Fenway are not good if I remember correctly.

Lackey I think it had to do more with facing the Red Sox in Fenway then it was the park. I wouldn't mind signing for a 3 year with an option for a 4th but wouldn't go beyond that.

1. Beckett

2. Lester

3. Webb/Harden/Bedard/Escobar/Felix: i really do not like Bedard's track record with him getting hurt all the time. Also, any deal with Felix, Buchholz is going to Seattle. With that said, i really hope Buchholz get a chance with the Sox.

4.Dice-K

5.Buchholz/Wake:I like both of these guys, but i think its time Buchholz gets a full season in the big leagues. i really see good things from him.

Could Wake be successful in the BP?

Posted
I hope Wake takes the first half of and comes back after the AS break. Will give them a fresh veteran arm in the 2nd half. While not taking a full season wear and tear on Wakefield.

Come back as a starter or in the pen?

As a SP. The Sox seem to always need some SP late(like most teams).

Well, i would not mind that. he always seems to keep the Sox in the game. And back to what you said, "him sitting half the year", that might really help him for the end of next year.
