Jimenez is the closest thing we have to a replacement level 3B in the minors right now. He's a college bat so he's a little older (24 years old and in AA) and he's reportedly not much defensively. But he's hitting the ball-- his contact rates are good, his average is consistently high, he's a hard strikeout, he's taking an adequate number of walks, and his power is improving in his age 24 season, which is pretty much when you'd expect that part of a player's power game to evolve. Good OBP, good AVG, good SLG, not much not to like there.

Probably a "Dojji Type" in the end, but with the paucity of good third basemen around the league, Jimenez intrigues me as a guy who is doing the right things to start breaking out in earnest at some point. And in some ways he reminds me of a poor man's Kevin Youkilis. With, of course, many fewer walks (but a respectable k/bb ratio in his own right of about 1:1.2).

I'm just curious what someone who's seen him in action more than I have can tell me whether he has the tools to go with his numbers and whether this guy has a chance of fighting his way onto the roster.

I guess that's fair. If he's really more than that having a bench role should allow him a chance to prove it.

Listen Dojji, this guy plays a position that requires power. His offensive numbers would be good from a middle infielder. Instead, we are talking about a 3b who isnt good defensively who likely profiles as a 1b at the major league level. That same guy has a low SLG for a corner IF and especially a 1b AND the sox already have VMart and Youk under contract, the likely 1b/3b combo for quite some time. So no, this kid doesnt have a Red Sox future, and likely has no major league future

Prospect|Yankees|The player in question is made of 150% pure awesomeness. Fear us.

Prospect|Sox|He could be good, but this is why he won't be.

Signing|Yankees|This is the missing piece. We'll win 160 games, and the umps will screw us out of 2.

Signing|Sox|Risky move, overpaid here, they'll regret this.

Injury|Yankees|They don't get hurt. Hypothetically, if they did, the recovery will be speedy with no impact to ability.

Injury|Sox|Everyone is a ticking time bomb. Once hurt, they'll never heal right.[/table]

VMart is likely to be our starting catcher in 2010.

Kevin Youkilis' minor league SLG was .439 and he never hit 10 or more HR's in the minors.

I think Jimenez has a very good shot at playing time, especially if he can fake it at third base where we and the league as a hole do not have a lot of depth.

he'll likely be in AAA next year. It'll be up to him to keep hitting there. If his contract skills continue to translate against the big league rejects in AAA, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be the first man up if we have trouble at the corners.

Seeing how butthurt you get when people use that is pure awesomeness. Kinda sucks when everything people need to know about you can be condensed into six little rows on a table, huh?

Actually, I'd say the mindless drone is the guy with 16,000+ posts of things that fall into six categories of biased opinion
