PASS

Because the awesomeness of Brad Penny and Junichi Tazawa has all but guaranteed us a playoff spot right?

Posted
We should all hit the Hash Bar.

That would be an entertaining outing for sure:lol:

If Padilla really only costs the veteran minimum, and is a FA at the end of the season, then I guess it wouldn't be a horrible thing to try. If it doesn't work they can just add him to the DFA list.

No but he might allow for Tazawa to go to the pen. I would imagine he is approaching his innings cap sooner rather then later. But that's just a guess on my part.

On the other hand his presence may inhibit development of guys like Tazawa, Buch, and Bowden.

Who f***ing knows? If there are any reasons not to bring this guy aboard then pass. This season is an embarrassment already. Why compound it?

It'll help our chances, champ.

Padilla is better than every pitcher in our rotation not named Beckett or Lester.

If you don't believe that, then you're high, buddy.

I say we leave the team as it is until the off season, if we cant win as currently constructed then we probably arent going to win anyways so lets not get ourselves on the hook with anyone else, unless it is a very good WW pickup but I see no one that id label as a good pickup on the Waivers currently so leave the team as is.

hmmm , lets see . a 1.50 + WHIP and a 5 ERA oh wait a sec that's what we get from Penny , Buchholz and tawaza so why add another ?

I dont see the improvement there

Stats.

Check them.

Only in 2007 has Padilla had an ERA over 5.00 or a whip over 1.50 in a full season.

Having Tazawa in the big club is stunting his development.

Logic:

Use it.

So the team we are currently chasing, has just released him, because they felt he wasnt good enough to be on their team. Why would Boston want to pick up the trash they just got rid of after Texas just passed them in the standings? Is he really that much better? If he were a decent option, wouldnt have Texas just held on to him, rather than seeing him sign with the team they are competing with for the WC?

EDIT: Gunna throw this in there, why did Texas release him? I was just going over their starting pitchers, seems to me he was one of their top 5......why cut him?

They released him because of non-baseball related issues.

Buchholz, Penny, and Wakefield are all better than Padilla. Although, Penny and Padilla are useless pitchers.

Jesus can we stop arguing over whether this team should pick up Padilla?

What difference would it make?

He's got a better ERA than Penny, a worse WHIP, gives up slightly fewer hits per game, and slightly fewer HRs. He walks more and strikes out fewer. Padilla does it in a weaker division. Frankly, I don't see much difference or much optimism in either case.

The fact that we are all scouting the waiver wire for options is indicative of where this season has gone. I don't think its a complete loss yet, but without Dice-K we are really scratching the bottom of the barrell in an otherwise deep rotation. Who figured that with Beckett, Lester, Dice-K, Wakefield, Penny, Smoltz, Buchholz, Masterson, Tazawa and Bowden this team would be really hurting for a reasonable starting pitching option? I would argue that the FO did plan for pitching depth and they actually built up a good pitching staff when everyone was healthy. Few teams succeed when 40% of their rotation misses a big chunk of the season.

I think the FO assumed that Dice-K might be less lucky and less effective than he was last year, but not that he wouldn't be able to battle through it and make something effective of the season. Instead he was out of shape and didn't make good adjustments. Despite his experience and success at high levels, he had to be benched. That's tough to plan for.

I'm fine if they get Padilla or not, I don't care either way.

so we agree ' date=' they all suck , some just suck harder than other , not enough to make a diference[/quote']

I don't dispute that.

However, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

For one, we can remove Tazawa from the rotation.

And he costs next to nothing.

Best of both worlds.

Padilla is supposedly a jackass off the field and the Rangers booted him off the team because of that.
I think we have a special jackass coach for him.

I don't think you'll see the Red Sox involved with any more waiver dealings this year after Gonzalez.

They just didn't figure on the two things that have killed them this year: Dice-K's disappearance and Ortiz' further decline.Waivers won't solve those issues. SS has been damaging as well, as they let Lugo go before they had assurance Lowrie was OK. That was a mistake. Their only hope is Buchholz suddenly becomes the stud Theo thinks he is, or Dice-K finally starts earning his pay.

According to Jayson Stark at ESPN, the Mets have placed former closer Billy Wagner on waivers with the hopes that they can unload him to another team. Stark says Wagner's imminent return could be considered a "glorified audition."

If Wagner were to be claimed, that team would be on the hook for the roughly $2.7MM remaining on his contract this year as well as the $1MM buyout on his option for next year. So if Wagner clears, which he most likely will, it looks like the Mets will be forced to pay a good chunk of the money he's due if they're going to move him.

Would the Sox be interested? I mean Oki is the only LHP in the BP.
