Wouldn't Tek have to hit below .200 for his defense to be considered unjustified for his poor hitting?

No, because he can't throw out baserunners, and probably has no effect on the pitchers ability to make good pitches.

And he does come in and get a timely hit here and there. A guy that strikes out three times when the Sox are up by 7 doesn't bother me as long as he can get on base in a close game.

SSS, but Varitek's Late and Close numbers is a .746 OPS. His normal OPS is .758.

well he cant, and his calling games well is out weighed by his inability to throw out even the slowest runners.

I know im new to this site, but you crack me up.. its hard to talk to you guys because you guys are just fans. being a coach at a very hi level you seen thing a different way, i guess.

i would love to know the numbers after jacoby has scored once he has stolen a base.. can you do the math on that for all of us??

oh and one more thing... can you do the math on how the pitchers change the way they pitch because he is on the bases and they have to worry about him stealing 2nd and 3rd???

no no... we want the math... not another ******** site...

f*** I am running out of space in my sig

How can you be a coach at a "hi" level if your grammar sucks s***?

Absolutely. I just happen to believe the statistical evidence that he would be better employed down at the bottom of the Red Sox lineup.

there is no doubt that his steals are a good thing but there is something to be said for how effective they are at different spots in the lineup, and if you can create more runs from the bottom of the lineup without taking away from run production at the front of the lineup then that is great. my only question is does his OBP (easily the most important stat for the leadoff spot) being taken out of the leadoff spot hurt the run production of the team as a whole more than it helps from a later spot in the lineup?

Isn't Ortiz batting .220? The BoSox need to bench Ortiz and possibly Varitek.:)

I don't disagree, but I wouldn't focus too much on batting average. It's merely a section of on-base percentage, which is obviously the measure for how often a player gets on base.

exactly, as far as im concerned Batting avg. only exsists to determine OBP, while avg. gives you a rough idea someone like Barry Bonds who holds the season record for walks had a massive OBP that year being that he already had a great avg., now I dont have the numbers in front of me (too lazy) I imagine that with his HRs and the fact that he was on base a prodigious amount he had to have had a s*** ton (technical term) of runs so IMO the higher your OBP the more runs you actually produce (other factors do play in such as OPS w/ RISP and HRs) but roughly a high OBP eventually turns into runs.

You are correct.

Regarding Ellsbury and the leadoff spot, Glanville has an op-ed in today's New York Times discussing leadoff hitting in general and Ellsbury and Red Sox in particular, in case anyone is interested.

nytimes.com/2009/09/21/opinion/21glanville-leadoff.html

Glanville argues that there is more to hitting first than OBP. Specifically, he suggests that Ellsbury's speed and what not induces errors, fielder's choices and poorer pitching that aren't directly credited to Ellsbury's stats.

Are there any attempts trying to measure this threat effect? For example, how much, if any, does the likelihood of a homerun increase when Ellsbury is on first base compared to when he isn't? Or compared to say Drew?

Posted

sounds like a sophistry to me.

Ellsbury's OBP is OK and his success rate is very good.. Let the intangibles be what they are as long as the base numbers are adequate.

Oh lord! ^ Idiot.

How nice of you.

My point is that I don't believe that such factors are significant, and as long as the base numbers are good it shouldn't matter that much. that's a legitimate take on your article, so take your exclamation of astonished disbelief and choke on it.

Oh s***!! Wow, I was totally talking about the idiot that came in to start s*** with only one post. That was for him not you.

I aree with you 100%

Disagree, singles are more valuable than walks
