Sure' date=' but what do those numbers look like after you adjust for league difficulty, and add his defensive weaknesses. Does it look like a significant upgrade?[/quote']

The problem is, that even at his worst, Guzman is a .270/320 hitter, in other words, not an automatic out.

Green is an automatic out, that is, in itself, a substantial upgrade.

That's pretty much where I stand too. It's enough of a confounding variable that it really needs to be dealt with honestly.

So you're looking at this purely from the perspective of offense? At what point does "not being an automatic out" cancel out the fact that a routine G6 isn't an automatic out either?

I'm taking defense into account.

He is slightly below average, but lemme tell ya, you don't stick in the bigs by only catching the ball.

You need to, you know, not create a black hole at the spot in the lineup that is assigned to you.

You don't stick at SS by just hitting the ball either. Especially when you only hit it as well as Guzman does.

he doesn't have the bat to carry both the bad glove and the bloated contract. One or the other might be fine, both makes him a walking franchise poison pill.

In only one year have Guzman's isolated walk skills been .50 points higher than his batting average. If Guzman is hitting .270, I'll bet his OBP is barely at .300. Throw in his defensive deficiencies, and Guzman would be a useless regular. About as useless as Green.

It wouldn't be a surprise in the least to see Guzman hit .270 for the Red Sox. He'd represent no upgrade, and cost $10 million.

Player A: .232 /.302/.365 .667 OPS.

Player B : .315/ .333/ .437 .770 OPS.

Would player B constitute a "marginal upgrade" over player A?

According to those stats, In 500 AB's, Guzman gets on base 15 more times the Green. 53 games left, roughly 200 AB's(not exact obviously). means Guzman probably gets on base 7-9 times more the Green would. Is that a big of an upgrade? Then add in his glove and the 8M+, it looks like a bad idea.

Maybe he just realized that he made a mistake having three first basemen.

Or maybe he realized dealing Lugo for Duncan was crap.

If I were the Nationals, I'd cut him loose and let the Red Sox eat that money.

Theo should have seen if he could have gotten Johnson + Guzman + cash for a decent minor leaguer. Would have saved us some cash, and freed Theo to focus on a pitcher.

I have to agree, that would indeed have been a superior move. I don't think anyone saw Lowrie going down again so soon though.

Look at the slugging, though.

This can only help.

f*** Aaron Boone.

Guzman has been hitting at a .318/.341/.443 clip since having lasik surgery prior to the 07 season (276 Games). Personally, I think that would be a significant upgrade at SS.

maybe right now but what of the future?

and is his contract and constriction of our future options worth this upgrade?

if you infact believe it is that much of an upgrade...

What future options? There aren't any really good shortstops on the market this offseason, unless you're willing to take a chance of tejada. Lowrie has a shot at being a good everyday player but I would like to seem him play/stay healthy for an entire season before making him the starting shortstop. And Navarro won't be ready until at least 2011. I think that Guzman can be a reliable bat and shortstop until the end of 2010 and then we will know whether Lowrie is capable of being an legitimate starter.

Just get Hanley.

I guess they don't have much choice right now. They are over a barrel. Of course they might try Youks at SS. Heck, that's pretty close to LF.

Good observation. The kind of thing Theo doesn't miss. Though he hasn't had much luck at SS since lettng Cabrera slip away.

Theo seems torn between what he wants. What he'd REALLY like is a SS with good defense and a solid bat, the question is which one is he prepared to sacrifice to maintain a long-term option at the position.

And unfortunately, getting one in FA is not likely going to happen:

Orlando Cabrera OAK

Bobby Crosby OAK

Adam Everett DET

Alex Gonzalez * CIN

Khalil Greene STL

John McDonald TOR

Marco Scutaro TOR

Miguel Tejada HOU

Jack Wilson * PIT

Unless he doesn't have to. I really, honestly think Hanley is going to at least be discussed in the off-season and wouldn't be surprised to see him dealt.

And even dealing for Hanley, you're sacrificing defense for offense -- even if it's a whole freakin' load of offense.

Hanley has been an average defensive SS the last two years.

You're knocking on Hanley?

Seriously?

With a .950 OPS and and 54 SB over that span.

Really? The last time I looked at his numbers -- and I admit it was a while ago -- I got the impression that he was pretty Jeterish.

If he's a competent defensive SS, then forget Guzman, suck it up through the bad times and go for the prize in the offseason.
