Guzman constantly scrapes the bottom in terms of UZR and FRAA. He's not Derek Jeter bad, but he's down there.

The Red Sox should go after Hanley Ramirez in 2010.

I'm completely on board with this idea.

But who plays until then?

That is NOT all that is important. Opportunity cost in 2010 is also important. That's most of what I'm arguing against.

BTW the small upgrade we get from Guzman over Green isn't worth the 4M he's still due this year either.

EDIT: Removed a pretty ridiculous typo

I would doubt that this would prevent them from going after Hanley Ramirez if he is available.

You don't think $17M of incumbent shortstop salary would interfere with their desire to go after another big name SS in the offseason?

I guarantee you they have to eat salary to get Guzman off the team, and with Lowrie around off the team is where Guzman should be going if Hanley's in the offing.

I also guarantee that the Marlins won't take Guzman for any price greater than free.

Green. You might not like it much, but as Whiffy McNobat shortstops go Green is one of the better ones.

I think the debate is whether Guzman is worth $10 million' date=' and how huge an upgrade he is. With his horrendous play at SS, having no power or patience, and moving to the most difficult division in baseball he might not the substantial upgrade we are expecting.[/quote']He is a substantial upgrade. Numbers don't tell the whole story. With runners in scoring position in a big game, we have shot with Guzman at bat. With Nick green or Chris Woodward batting, I go to the kitchen and make a sandwich. Like I said in an earlier post, sometimes you have to overpay to preserve your franchise. The FO obviously views finishing out of the money as a very bad option so they are willing to overpay to help the team make the playoffs. As fans, we should be happy that they are willing to make this investment in this team.

I could quote you all the numbers that say otherwise, but I'd be talking to a wall.

Suffice it to say that you're very wrong.

I guess that is why the FO is looking for a SS.

Guzman has some pro's and con's.

You have to take 2010 into account as well IMO. Will acquiring Guzman effect what the team does in the off season? Would his cost prevent them from offering more $ to certain FA's?

Taking that into account+ his inability to get on base+ a questionable glove, the acquisition loses a little of it's luster IMO.

I mean, is he that much better then Lugo?

On the other hand it might be better then having Green/Woodward doing their best dirt devil impressions @ SS.

It's a tough choice really.

Would Tejada be a good 1/2 year stop gap?

I would be much, much happier with a waiver claim of Miguel Tejada.

Are you for real?

Are you?

You claim reactionary thinking is a great evil, and yet you're so emotional over Green that you're willing to get stuck with an albatross contract for Julio Lugo, Mark II instead of showing a bit of patience and going for the real prize in the offseason, which Guzman interferes with. Just because "Green sucks ass."

Seriously?

So Green will start over Guzman?

After the first week or so, don't rule it out. Guzman is very weak defensively.

Posted
Im a pretty big fan of Tejada too even with his age but how much would he cost?

Is he even available?

Posted
Was he placed on waivers?

No but (I think) he's a free agent after the year and at his age he probably wants to test the market.

I'm siding with Crespo and Dojji here. I think patience rather then pushing the panic button will end up being better in this situation. I was intrigued by Guzman at first. But the more I think about it and read about him I'm not sold on him. But that's just my opinion.

Edit: Excluding any games missed for injury.

Isn't it customary for a neutral party to hold the wager?

If so, send me the Presidente!

This is ********.

We're not discussing "Dipre's moves" we're discussing a move that is being contemplated by the FO.

Stop your fail, Captain Douche, this is not personal.

The fact of the matter is Guzman>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Green.

And besides, NO ONE HERE HAS STATED THEY WANT GREEN TO GO AWAY.

We simply want him backing up, which is what he's supposed to do.

I don't know how this is a panic move. Unless we part with a good prospect for him and he turns into Jeff Bagwell, this is just a money move, and it is relatively short term. He's not in the first year of a 5 year contract. It would be two months and next season, and he'd probably be our starting SS next season after seeing the FA pool.
