Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield [stats] is considering a second cortisone shot to deal with a sciatic problem that has spread to his left calf and delayed his return to the rotation.

Placed on the disabled list with a strained lower back July 21, the All-Star right-hander received a cortisone shot in a joint there that helped alleviate the pain. But then he was hit with sciatica that seized his left hamstring and left him barely able to walk on the team’s recent trip to Texas.

“I don’t even know where this came from,” Wakefield said. “I woke up with a little pain, and the next thing I know I can’t walk down the street. When you saw me limping around in Texas, it was my hamstring killing me. I couldn’t walk more than 20 feet without it bothering me.

“That slowly subsided, and now it’s gone down to my calf and the back of my knee. When I walk, my left foot goes back, but I can’t push off.”

Yes, but I'm not sure I want to add another Penny/Smoltz type guy... And anyone better likely wont make it through waivers.

Seems it might be neccissary. I think Tazawa and Bowden might get a few spot starts.

I agree and good pitching is probably not going to clear waivers. I wonder how close Sheets is to pitching. He's still a FA right?

Sheets, Byrd Mulder, Lieber, Prior, Rogers are some of the veterans that are on cots FA SP list. Any of those worth a flyer?

I think we need to make a trade.

How about DiceK/Buchholz/Anderson/Tazawa/B or C prospect for Santana and David Wright?

Or DiceK/Buchholz/Youkilis/Ellsbury/Pedroia for Felix Hernandez and Ichiro?

Little late for wanting a trade.

I finally give you a straight non crazy response to the thread you have started and you still take the piss out of me.<_>

But it's all good. When I end up being right it will make it o so much sweeter:lol:;)

This is not good news about Wakefield. They need to get him back, because we have 3 sacks of garbage in the last 3 rotation slots. Wakefield would be an upgrade and that says a lot. It is a little late for a trade, especially since Cliff Lee got moved and Roy Halladay was available. I think we will soon be looking at Buchholz like Yankee fans have been looking at Hughes and Kennedy, but instead of seeing Johan Santana every time they take the mound, we will see Halladay every time Buchholz takes the mound.

I'd like to see one from the group of Dice-K, Smoltz, Penny and Buchholz step up to be a solid number three for the post-season but if things stay as is, yea I think we need another starter
Posted
Buchholtz is an anxious, nervous type who appears to be intimidated by the opposing team. I don't think he'll ever be more than he is now. Bad Penney is inconsistent and Smoltz just doesn't seem to have good stuff anymore. And yes, we need another reliable starter - where he's coming from or when, who knows.

Define "add." I think the Sox might need to move some players in and out of their rotation but I don't see a guy they can acquire who has the right combination of waiver friendly and effective. That means their best bet is to look to their internal options and maybe "add" a rookie from the minors.

Any thoughts on giving Bowden or Tazawa a shot, and moving Smoltz into the bullpen and assuming Masterson's role?

Smoltz v. RHP this season:

.247/.266/.416/.681, tOPS of 52, sOPS of 87

Smoltz v. LHP:

.397/.440/.654/1.094, tOPS of 146, sOPS of 180

I'm all for it. I think Bowden is ready and I think he's a better pitcher right now than Clay.

 Yes I've been saying Smoltz to the BP when/if Wake comes off the DL. I've also said numerous times I think Bowden and Tazawa gets some start down the stretch. But I guess since it was coming from me, you must have seen it ass dumb BS.

Could you be more butthurt about it?

I guess I could try.

You kill me for 90% of my posts. Now I have some out there you agree with, and you reduce the conversation to how much my ass hurts...

Since we harp so much on him, we should give him credit when he's right.

Do we credit broken watches when the time happens to coincide with the time they are stuck on?

Fling enough crap against the wall, and you are bound to end up with something that looks like Van Gogh's Starry Night. While the end result may be art, I wouldn't call the crap flinger an artist.

You say that, but you also say this....

But it's all good. When I end up being right it will make it o so much sweeter.

Gloating about when you are right, should that even happen, when there is a 5 pound sack full of stuff that you have been wrong about, is essentially saying, "When my crap looks like a Van Gogh, then I'll call myself an artist."

You may see it differently, but then you'd be wrong. Again.

I think in the context of the discussion we were having I thought that would be taken as plain sarcasm. + the;), but I guess it could have been missed...{<_>

Come on man, no need to be so harsh on the guy.

Zack Greinke battled anxiety problems for years and look at where he is today.

Dan Bard had to spend time in the head shrinker's office during his meltdown in 2007 for that matter, and look where HE is today.

I still believe Smoltz will improve to provide a real option there. Also I am expecting Dice-K to return in his best form.

Since Theo is committed to Buchholz by word and deed I just hope he works it out sooner than later. I don't like the fact that he doesn't seem to be able to execute pitches to get out of trouble without bleeding runs. the sooner he gets past that the less likely he is to be out of baseball within 3 years.

Yeah but Greinke's the same age as Buchholz and had a head start on him in the development process. Buchholz isn't really a prospect anymore..he's 25 years old. We got Josh Beckett when he was about 25 years old, he already won a WS and was close to ace status.

Greinke has a carer 3.87 ERA and Buchholz has a career 5.64..they're almost the same age. By the time Buchholz beats his "anxiety problems" he'll be 26 or 27.

Buchholz will eventually be a good pitcher. He is a guy who needs to dominate hitters to feel comfortable. It is not enough for him to get the out. He needs to be perfect. And any kid who comes up with that mentality from day 1 without even a little bit of control will struggle mightily to make it in the ALE. Buchholz' best bet is to learn how to pitch on the major league level with no pressure. There are guys who thrive on the pressure and rise to the occasion as youngsters, like Lester and Paps did. Then there are guys with all the stuff in the world who just arent confident in themselves and need a nudge to get going.
