Figured this could be the catch-all place for things that don't deserve their own thread.

Rotoworld:

Red Sox manager Terry Francona revealed late Sunday night that Dustin Pedroia was out of the lineup due to complications with his wife's pregnancy.

Kelli Pedroia is less than two months from her due date. It's not clear how many days Dustin will miss, but we'll be sure to keep you updated.

That sucks, I hate anything that involves Julio Lugo having to play. Hopefully everything turns out alright.

Edit: Seems everything is alright now, considering Pedroia is in the lineup for tonights game.

This should probably go in the trade candidates thread but that's turned into the designated Halladay thread so I'll just put it here. Gammons reports that the Sox are after SS Russ Adams, recently DFAed by Toronto. Adams turns 29 next month and has a .247/.313/.372 line in 286 career games over 5 seasons.

Russ Adams was a big time bust. I remember when he came up, he was supposed to be their SS of the future and Aaron Hill was kinda in the shadow behind him. Turns out, Hill became the much better player

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Red Sox phoned the Rockies about Garrett Atkins, who's hitting much better since the beginning of June.

Looks like he's been hot lately, but has a bad line for the overall season.

I liked JVE. He should have had a legit shot as someone's 4th OF by now. Has all the tools to really be useful, just never got a real chance.

I guess with Bubba Bell in Pawtucket though we really didn't need him anymore. He's pretty much the same guy just younger.

And someone had to go when it came time to take Lowrie off the 60-day DL. I guess JVE was nominated.

He should catch on somewhere. We might even see him in the majors if he joins a team with a weak outfield.

Julio Lugo was absent from Wednesday night's victory over the Athletics.

Lugo left the team to attend to a serious family matter. It is not yet known if he will be available for Thursday's game.

hope everything turns out ok

Seeing what they have in case it's time to deal Brad Penny? Or just a throwaway start to line up the rotation the way Tito wants it for the second half?

Francona said this was just to set-up the rotation after the break. My question is this. What happens to Buck after his start? He has only one option left?

I'm not sure, but if I was Buchholz I wouldn't be too psyched about getting my call up for only one game so the rotation could be in order. I definitely sympathize with his wish to be in the big leagues.

Very few players would be virtually guaranteed a starting spot one year, improve themselves in the minors when that doesn't work out, be assured a future with the club because of their elite talent, but then spend most of the following season on the AAA roster. He's done what they asked of him and there's no light at the end of the tunnel for for him until next year.

Even for next year, does anyone see the Sox not trying to replicate what they did this year in terms of SPs? What does that mean for Buchholz? Would Bowden be his backup plan?

Recalling Bucholz might be the precursor to a bigger move.

They might trade Penny or Saito.

It might be better for Bucholz to spend the rest of the year in the bullpen facing better competition.

It's very possible they're showcasing him to Toronto. As someone said in the other thread, before it was announced that Buchholz would be starting on Friday, the Jays were scouting him. Normally I think mlbtraderumors is full of s***, but this time the report does make some sense.

You could say a Penny for the thoughts of the FO on this one.

I think they are trying to touch all the bases before the trade deadline July 31. They want to know what they have before they make any deals. Buchholz is either being showcased, or they are seeing if he can take a spot in the rotation. Maybe both, since what they do tradewise will probably also depend on Lowell's health and how Lowrie does at SS when he returns. Right now, I think they have a fair idea of what it will take to get the players they want in trade, but they haven't decided yet if they need them.

Is Buchholz trade bait for Halliday? I say it's Santana all over again. They will do whatever is necessary to keep Halliday away from the Yankees. That probably means he stays in Toronto, or goes to the NL.

No they wont

Agree.

The FO's MO is not to block the Yanks, but to look for ways to improve the club.

If they can screw the Yanks in the process, then even better.
