Believe it or not, the A's were debating between Pedroia and Suzuki in R2 in 2004.

I can understand that. Despite Pedroia's college performance, there existed, at the time, the idea that he was just too small to perform at the MLB level. I'm so glad that he has defied conventional wisdom. He is my size ( height wise, anyway!).

He doesn't exactly have the physique of a pro athlete though. He's a little chubby.

Just because you're shorter than the average for a sport doesn't mean you shouldn't be given a chance. If you can play well, that's all that should matter.

 

People who underestimate abilities simply because of one's height annoy me. Probably because I'm under 5 feet tall. I'm a gal, so socially it's not like it can be for guys, but it still amazes me what people assume.

All my friends are 6+ feet tall too. One of them is by definition a "giant" he's so tall. I think that means you're over 6'5'' or something like that. My girlfriend is normal sized at least though. It would be real awkward for me to be dating a girl 6 feet tall.

Height definitely can make difference in reach and stuff like that, no argument. But Pedroia isn't actually a midget or something, and he knows how to hustle. So yeah, it's great they gave him a chance to shine in another position.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. Do you remember when he first came up though? It was pretty comical to see a guy about the same height standing up as the catcher in their crouch swinging out of his heals on every pitch. I can see why people had their doubts about him but I'm really glad our front office did their scouting and picked him.
