Pitching well against the 2nd worst offense in the majors is asking too much?

Pitching well against major league teams as soon as he returns? It could be. It's not like he was on vacation, he had shoulder surgery.

I didn't know Oakland changed their bats for newspapers.

They're ML caliber hitters, and would probably be faring a lot better if it weren't for that cavern of a ballpark.

How many rehab starts did he get...

I'm not sure what's worse, Smoltz getting rocked or our offense getting 1 hit by Brett f***ing Anderson.

I don't mean to be rude, but facing minor league teams isn't the same.

Weren't you the guy who said "Why should we be worried about Garret Olson"?

You got me there. It's much more logical to claim the game's over against a pitcher with a 5.00+ ERA to claim we shouldn't be worried about a pitcher with a 5.00+ ERA. Give me a break, we aren't even half way through the game.

I know, but his velocity is there, he just isn't executing. I realize he might need some more time, but with the Yankees breathing down our neck (and tons of talent in the minors waiting to come up) we can't really afford to let him throw stinkers. Hopefully he will find his way soon, like Penny did, but it better be soon.

I realize I'm being a bit extreme/critical because of the game conditions. Usually 4 runs wouldn't be the end of the world, but tonight our offense looks flat.

It's not Smoltz' fault we have about 9,000 flavors of suck in our lineup.

That's why I'm not worried. If he was throwing 88-89, I'd be worried. But he's struggling with his "touch" pitches. Those pitches take practice and repetition. And I'm trusting, given his history, that he'll come around after a few starts just as he always has in the past.

They are still one of the worst offenses. 29th in Avg and OBP, last in SLG, 24th in runs, etc. Bad.

Believe it or not, they hit BETTER at home.

Home: .242 BA .320 OBP .381 SLG .701 OPS

Away: .238 BA .307 OBP .350 SLG .658 OPS

Smoltz' injury, rehab, first start at Fenway aside. Even the worst offenses in baseball can have good days. The season's 162 games long, no offense is going to be kept down every time.

This begs the question.

Are they not ML hitters?

Brian Tallet, Garret (who until today I thought was named "Greg") Olson, Brian Anderson (and I'm assuming Dallas Braden tomorrow).

I'm so mad and I'm not even mad at all. I'm just depressed. This blows.

I'm not worried about Smoltz, I just don't like the results right now. I don't like dropping games to bad teams. 1 out of 4 at home while the Yankees are right behind us isn't very fun.

Sorry to interrupt the vital baseball dialogue, but di anyone else see the NESN shot of the plane flying in front of the moon over Boston. f***in' cool.

Yet, we've averaged over 5 runs our last 3 games. It seems like our offense is waking up until the last 3 innings of games.

They had a fly over over F-16's at Fenway on the fourth when I was there. Now THAT was cool (I wanted to be a fighter pilot when I was younger). I'm glad they announced there was going to be a fly over first though. There was a little tension given that it was the 4th of July in Boston. N. Korea for one, always tests missiles on the fourth. It's would be a prime target for a terrorist attack. I can't imagine how crazy everyone would be if they heard a rocket sound coming towards the ballpark.

No shock there, whatsoever.

Teahen would probably do the same thing.

After reading your last post, I was about to suggest that you have another pint.

I'm very encouraged that you have a strong sense of self-preservation.
