seeing as I was 3 years old in 1986' date=' 2003 is still the most heartache I've ever felt as a sports fan[/quote']

Three years old in 1986! Wow. I was 30 and was newly wed. I remember the night the Sox won the pennant.

My Mother- in-law was friends with the cousin of Anton Fig, the drummer on the David Letterman Show. She got us tickets to the show (at the time there was a nine month waiting list). My Wife and I drove down to New York City in my Mustang GT. I had great apprehensions about this as I have never felt comfortable in New York and had visions of my car being stolen or vandalized. Wife Wife grew-up around New York and navigated perfectly.

We went to the show. It was funny. Tom Brokaw was the big guest. During commercial breaks, they showed the Mets/Astro's game on the studio monitors. This was NBC, and the LCS were on NBC. At one point , in the middle of the show, Allen Colter (sp) announced "Dave, Mookey Wilson is at bat".

After the show ended, we took the elevator down stairs. We went outside to the street just as everyone went nuts! The Mets had won the NL Pennant. We drove out to East Hampton (where my Wife's Parents lived). We arrived just in time for the Sox/Angels

game to begin. The Sox won and had the AL Pennant.

Of course, the rest of the story is not pleasant. But I'll never forget that night!

By the way, Bob Seager was scheduled to be on the show but was sick. Oh well.

I actually agree with him, for the following reasons

1. It was the World Series

2. It was the last hurrah for a lot of guys on that "Yankee Dynasty"

3. They had the lead in the 9th inning of Game 7 of said WS

4. It was the first time Yankee fans saw the chink in the armor and experienced a crushing defeat with Mo on the mound

For me, far above anything else, it was worse because of number 3. Rivera strikes out the side in eighth. Bottom of the order coming up in the ninth. Two outs away from a championship. Two strikes on Womack. Not to mention it was all made possible because of Rivera's error. That was rough.

Don't get me wrong, 2004 was horrible, and it's very close between the two. Maybe it would have been worse for me than 2001 if I made a habit of taunting Red Sox fans, like J_E mentioned.

The debate is not about how Gom felt, because honestly nobody gives a f*** about that.

I debate the 2004 loss was worse than the 2001 because of what i lived.

I was at a sports bar with a mix of Yankee and Red Sox fans, and when that 27th out came around, i had never seen so many men crying their eyes out combined with so many screams of happines and joy.

Just so you know, there is no way anything beats being the only baseball franchise in the history of ever to have lost a 7 game series after being up 3-0.

The 2001 series, LMAO.

In your opinion. It's almost like you're making this out to be something that is an absolute, and not a personal opinion. I'm not going to debate this with you, because there is no point.

I'm not talking about personal specifics.

To some fans, some other playoff series that was lost on some other year is the worse loss ever.

But in the grand scope of things, nothing is worse than becoming the galactic signal for choking.

Well, I can't say you don't know what the 2001 loss, because you experienced it in 1986 (assuming you were old enough).

2004 was awful, for all the reasons that have been mentioned, but it wasn't like being two outs away from a championship.

Or one.

Why is this so difficult for people to grasp?

s***, I was six months old when '86 happened. No matter how much 2003 stung it's nothing compared to being ONE OUT AWAY FROM A WORLD SERIES and blowing it.

Oh lol. Well, if you had been a fan in 1986, I think there's a chance you would have a different opinion.

I'm not saying this to start drama, or anything like that, and this might not be the case for you guys. However, I really believe that a lot of Red Sox fans feel this way because they want to feel like their team gave the Yankees and their fans their worst loss.

I think after being victimized by Yankee fans after both ALCS losses to the Yankees, nothing could be worse from my perspective than talking 4,000 pounds of s*** after each Yankee win during the series, only to lose 4 in a row and suffer the wrath of 86 years of frustration.

Is this so hard to grasp?

For me personally? 2003 was the worst.

For Yankee fans as a whole? Has to be 2001.

For me, and the Yankees fans that I know, "suffering the wrath of 86 years of frustration" is not that big a deal.

Obviously there are Yankee fans that despise the Red Sox. I root against the Red Sox in almost every game they play, but not because I hate them. In most situations, them losing benefits the Yankees. I care about the Yankees winning. I hope the majority of Yankee fans feel this way too.

I completely understand that, considering, like you said, you weren't old enough in 1986 to be a fan. I was around a decent amount of Red Sox fans that night at Yankee Stadium. It was the best game I've ever been to, all things considered, even better than watching them win the whole thing in 1999. I was thrilled. However, I've never seen more pain on people's faces over a sporting event. It was quite an experience.

Then, for discussion end's sake:

There are 2 types of Yankee fan suffering:

Those who despise the Red Sox like they banged their wives will think 2004 is the worst.

Rational, none "hating the Red Sox is bigger than life" think 2001 is the worst because they were about to win a WS.

Finding the middle point is fun.

I wasnt really trying to debate how anyone felt, it had to hurt and i doubt that any yankees fans can say it didnt but i was more trying to point out the satisfaction of all those coming to the park during game 4 having to deal with the smug fans of their hated rivals as what seemed like another season ended in dissapointment at the hands Yankees unfolded, getting to watch as their team of self-proclaimed "idiots" pulled off an amazing 4 game rally to complete an amazing series in baseball history. Maybe 01 did hurt worse but i wasnt posting this to jab any yanks fans i was posting this to bring back great memories for every sox fan who got to watch the hurt of 86 years of dissapointment dissapear for atleast a moment. it wasnt for any yankees fans who may be haunting these forums...

I'm a little surprised Crunch didn't mention another series. I love it when some of the younger guys on the site piss and moan about having to listen to Joe Morgan call games. Really? Oh, really? How about if you were 10 years old and Joe Morgan's 9th inning flair to center gives Cinci a one run lead and your boys can't answer the call in the bottom. What a great team for a kid to watch, you thought they could do anything at anytime, and they had THE BIG RED MACHINE BY THE BALLS...monster game six, jump out to a 3 run lead, only to slowly, painfully let it slip away and f***ing crush my life, courtesy of Joe "Arm Fart" Morgan. f***er.

So glad all that curse idiocy is history. We'd be a lot more miserable if that 2004 miracle hadn't happened.

Just grateful I got to watch it. I still can't believe though that I got depressed and didn't watch Game 4. Of all the games I had to miss!!! The Roberts steal never had the same impact in replay.

I never found a photo of the policemen guarding the foul lines in Game 6 after the Slap (or was it the disputed Bellhorn Bomb?. Anyone luckier than me? I had to listen to that game on the radio so I never got to see it but I've always wanted to. I'd love to find an image of it.

You know what's funny?

Idiots like DrSoxFan can't take the fact that a good percentage of Yankee fans, if not the majority, really didn't care as much as they wanted them to. Sure, we lost. Sure, the team choked. No big deal. It happens. We won in 96, 98, 99, and 2001. We had crushing losses in 97 and 01. We were steamrolled in 2002. We won...we lost...and we got used to it. We were happy when we won, and sad when we lost. However, having been there so often in such a short span, it tempered things.

The "fact" of the matter is that you hate us 100 times more than we hate you. For the average Red Sox fan, there is a loathing for the Yankees that we can't even understand. There isn't a Yankee fan who understands DECADES of frustration. For the Yankee fan, the Red Sox are a nuisance to be disposed of, a fly to be swatted. We don't, we can't hate you like you hate us. You just haven't been good enough for long enough, or beaten us enough.

It kills morons like DrSoxFan that we really didn't get crushed like you did in 2003, or even better in 1986. We just said f*** it....and it's about time.

Personally, I think being ONE STRIKE AWAY from winning the WORLD SERIES with a two-run lead and no one on is a bigger choke. Not even close.

Especially when the scoreboard read "Congratulations Red Sox".
