This has been confirmed by Francona himself. Smoltz starts on the 25th. They also not that Smoltz will sit inbetween Lester and Beckett, meaning that DiceK would be pushed back from his regular rest. This is a way for the sox to see what Smoltz has before moving Penny. This is also a way to piss off his young bucks in Beckett and Lester who both will likely want to work on regular rest. Power pitchers coming back on extra rest are typically too strong and dont locate well.

There has been no commitment to a 6 man rotation. They have talked about separating starts by pitchers who are more likely to tax the bullpen. Any 6 man rotation would be temporary. Someone will fall out of that rotation after a few turns based on poor performance or due to a trade.

Exactly, 700.

They're leveraging their depth, auditioning starters, saving arms....but likely won't do this for an extended period of time.

It's hard enough to come up with 4 effective starters, let alone 5 or 6. There will be fallout...someone will falter, get hurt, whatever, and they'll work back down to the 5-man rotation.

the yankees did this for 2 turns back in 2004 and they lost 8 of those 12 games and allowed boston to get back in the race for the ALE.

Did the Yankees have THIS kind or depth at SP?

What games were those?

Orlando Hernandez spent a lot of time out of the rotation that year. And Loaiza pitched his way out of the rotation eventually.

That's only two turns of the rotation, not exactly indicative of how the Sox will do (and without looking at the gamelogs, wouldn't that be one turn of the rotation since the first turn is on regular rest?)

I believe this is more the schedule Dice-K had when he pitched in Japan so that should help him out

any idea what roster move will enable this to happen? Bard back to Pawtucket?

Wow, that was a creative way to get your dig in at the Red Sox. I mean, it really took a lot of... imagination to come up with that criticism

That was the Yankees in 2004. I don't see how the two are related.

it wasnt imagination, its fact. Power pitchers like their rest. Clemens in his earlier days hated extra rest. Mussina before he lost his stuff hated extra rest. Burnett hated extra rest. They've all been quoted as such. The extra rest has them coming out too strong, not locating and with too much bite on breaking pitches.

Last I checked, Clemens, Mussina and Burnett weren't in the Red Sox rotation.
