I dont disagree. In terms of raw talent drafted and if you assume every player signs, the sox have absolutely had the best draft outside of Washington (having two top 10 picks helps). I just have a hard time thinking they are going to get EVERY one of these guys. As a matter of fact, I expect the sox to set a record for players unsigned in a draft. And thats not being biased. I think the sox are swinging for the fences. They'll set a number on each high school kid, watch them this summer and then make a fair offer. A good amount of these kids will not sign, mostly because there wont be room for all of them and a good amount of them are worth more than their slots would entail.

Why would the Sox (or anyone for that matter) draft someone that they believed may not sign?

Because it gives them exclusive opportunity to try to sign that player. Teams usually sign at least a few players they won't end up signing.

HS stud has full ride to school X and demands, say, 2m signing bonus if he is going to give that up to sit in the minors for 4 years. Most teams pass. Sox come in and use a late round draft pick on the kid, see if they can convince him otherwise. Usually they can't or aren't willing to pay what it takes to convince them otherwise, but with the remaining talent in those rounds it isn't a huge loss to use the draft pick that way.

Yep. It is a bit more complicated than that. A lot of times, the teams know how much it would take to sign them right away. A lot of these late signability guys havent proven enough to be first round picks and are demanding so much that they get passed on through the first 10 rounds. So a team like NY or Boston will swoop in and either offer what they want, or watch them until August 17th (this yrs deadline). If they prove that they are worth it, then the sox or yanks will offer it. If the player doesnt show enough but looks pro material, the team will then offer a reduced rate and sometimes the player takes it. Sometimes (as the yankees had with Dwyer a couple yrs back) the player doesnt maintain velocity or gets injured and the team doesnt offer a contract.

Point being (and your useful elaboration aside), the Red Sox regularly draft guys they might not be able to sign.

stealing some stuff from the soxprospects thread:

"He wants to be a Boston Red Sox," said Patrick Robey, Renfroe's coach at South Panola. "He's ready to go play everyday. There's some negotiating that's got to go on, but it looks like that's probably going to happen."

David Renfroe’s next deadline is August 17 to sign a contract before school starts at Ole Miss, where he signed to play collegiate baseball.

Renfroe said he is looking to sign a contract around the $1 million mark.
