Have you ever seen this kid play? I havent. All I can go off of are the scouting reports' date=' which grade him as a speedy, all glove, no bat SS.[/quote']

Ok.

the guy the sox signed scores an 80 on the 20-80 scale. He scored below average in both power and contact' date=' but above average in speed. He is essentially a light hitting, good speed, defensive whiz. He is essentially Ramiro Pena. Would you pay 8 mil for Ramiro Pena?[/quote']

Ramiro Pena is not an elite defensive SS. I think they are looking for a player who actually changes the game with his defense, as Ozzie Smith did.

Don't even try to convince Jacko.

Everything i've read about the kid says he's a once-in-a-generation defensive talent.

If Jacko wants to think Ramiro Pena is as well, let him.

All we know right now is his rating. Pena was an 80/80. This guy is an 80/80. That is ALL we know right now

Then stop making stupid assumptions and comparing him to Ramiro Pena.

Jesus christ you are dull. All we have is the rating. We have two guys with the same rating. I would assume you could consider them equal. Oh, and by the way, wanna know where the "once in a generation" glove comments came from? Theo and his mouthpieces in the Boston media. Nobody outside of them has made that comment. The only objective data from baseballamerica is the ranking

Lol i'm dull?

You're comparing the guy to Ramiro f***ing Pena.

You know nothing about the guy, and the scout's POV is off a tremendously small SSS.

Wait 'till the guy plays before you make such an idiot comparison.

It's like comparing Dayan Viciedo to Scott Rolen.

Stop it.

I don't think you'd find anyone who would pay 8mil for Pena, so doesn't that have to lead you to believe there IS more to this?

This is a completely unprecedented signing by an organization who has an exceptional eye for scouting talent. I have to believe that the Sox believe they have a serious talent on their hands to pay more than 4-5 mil more than ANY international signing they've ever had.

What's wrong with him being compared to Ramiro Pena? He's a legit ML cost controlled utility infielder with plus defense and above average speed. I'm sure the Sox could use a Pena right now.

Because Pena has completed his development.

Who're either of you two to say that after going through the minors he won't end and average MLB hitter.

Something Pena will never be by the way.

the sox have had a terrible eye for INTL talent. They have typically overpaid for players who dont pan out in the INTL forum. Their biggest conquests have been in the draft, which is the exact opposite for NY

He played in Cuba. While being younger than his peer group. Scout's take on him is exactly that. A Take.

See, this is why we think you're an idiot.

You're no one to talk about lacking knowledge of the basics of player development seeing as how you worship every AAAA the Yanks bring along.

Get real, champ.

Prospect|Yankees|The player in question is made of 150% pure awesomeness. Fear us.

Prospect|Sox|He could be good, but this is why he won't be.

Signing|Yankees|This is the missing piece. We'll win 160 games, and the umps will screw us out of 2.

Signing|Sox|Risky move, overpaid here, they'll regret this.

Injury|Yankees|They don't get hurt. Hypothetically, if they did, the recovery will be speedy with no impact to ability.

Injury|Sox|Everyone is a ticking time bomb. Once hurt, they'll never heal right.[/table]

That chart is the sole reason I only point and laugh at his posts now. It's more reliable than sunrises.

This I don't believe to be true. It's far too early to really make a call on the Sox's bonus babies. They have only recently really started handing out big contracts and most the of the players with the .5-1mil+ bonuses (Almanzar, Tejeda, Perez, etc.) are still basically teenagers.

In fact two INTL FAs have gotten 1mil+ from the Red Sox in the past 5 years: Tazawa (1.8mil) and Almanzar (1.5mil). For the Red Sox to give out a 6mil bonus (about 4 times as much as anyone has gotten) has to lead me to believe they value Iglesias as more than an all-field, no-hit player.

you only point and laugh because you have nothing original to offer. It seems your entire existence now is to flame me, which flatters me. But at the same time, shows that you, in fact, have no life.

Pointing out examples of your hypocrisy and talking out of both sides of your mouth isn't flaming you. It's putting your s***, for lack of a better descpritive term for what it is, right in front of your own face to smell. If that "enflames" you, then go to the source, you, and make a change.

No offense Spudboy, but a guy doesn't paint a pretty picture by himself.

Getting back to INTL signees...

Dominican Instructs have started and two yankee signees have looked great.

Christopher Cabrera, the 16yr old signee that the Yankees nabbed for around 400K looks really good. He's topping out at 96mph although his offspeed stuff and control needs a LOT of work

And Gary Sanchez, the 2.5mil bonus baby came through in his first game. He hit a go-ahead 2 run bomb to dead center in the rain shortened affair.

For those that dont know, the Dominican Instructs are a collection of DSL, VSL, Short season and A ball players. They are usually your best and brightest from those teams, so the competition is typically pretty good, especially for a 16 yr old catcher

Gary Sanchez opened eyes in Instructs this yr. Scouts were raving about his defensive capabilities first and foremost. As a 16 yr old, he showed incredibly advanced footwork, blocking skills and a cannon for an arm. As a hitter, some of the scouts had reported that he is more advanced at this juncture than Jesus Montero was. Sanchez is likely to start in the GCL for 2010 and will make his long season debut in 2011. His ETA is 2013 or thereabouts. But if he truly has Montero's offensive potential as well as a strong defensive skillset right now, he might be one of the best INTL signees of the past few years. I really like this kid.

I love Cabrera, we always seem to add a nice arm every IFA period. 2006 was Heredia, 2007 was Vizcaino, 2008 was Banuelos and I think Cabrera will continue that. Ramirez(signed a few years ago, 2006-7? maybe) seems legit too.
