Walker sucker-punches Aaron Ward. Possible broken orbital bone. Walker needs to take some time off. Like the rest of the playoffs would be nice.

Ward left the game with 2:47 remaining after Walker punched him in the face. Walker was given a misconduct, a fighting major and an instigator penalty.

Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice laughed off the possible repercussions.

"Scott probably has sore knuckles," he said.

Asked whether there will be a fine, he added: "I may have to sell my truck."

After the Walker sucker punch, the objective Carolina fans on HF chimed in that they didn't like it...thought it was cheap.

Later, the less knowledgeable fans hit the board and even today they're saying stuff like "Ward called Walker a retard, he deserved it" and "If you can't take it, don't give it"

Most of these "fans" find it acceptable that Walker suckered Ward and actually are happy.

IMO, it was totally indefensible...not pre-meditated, but still, not giving a guy any chance to defend himself is cheap.

What was even more to the point is that half the Montreal fans, all but the most partisan, were defending Aaron Ward -- a Bruin -- and calling a spade a spade.

I would be very surprised if it isn't at least a 5 game suspension. B's should be good and fired up for Tuesday!

RALEIGH, NC -- The National Hockey League today announced that Hurricanes forward Scott Walker has been fined $2,500 for an incident that occurred at the 17:13 mark of the third period of Game 5 against the Boston Bruins. There will be no additional punishment assessed.

"We are satisfied with the league's ruling," said Hurricanes President and General Manager Jim Rutherford. "After our team received several punches throughout the series leading up to Game 5, it was a matter of time before one was going to be thrown back."

"I accept the league's decision," said Walker. "Based on what was said on the ice as I was dropping my gloves, it was my understanding that I was engaged in an altercation."

Rutherford is a dicksmack.

Walker's defense of "he thought he was engaged in an altercation" is alright I guess. I mean I thought they were going to fight. I don't think Ward expected it to happen as quick as it did as well. Maurice's comments were pretty out of place and disrespectful, and Rutherford's show a potential level of intent which is BS too.

All that being said, I still think it was a cheap shot, thrown with bad intent, and IMO should have been a match penalty. Sucks for Walker and the Canes though, I suspect someone will be after his head tomorrow, so we'll see.

Edit: Also pair that with Jokinen blatantly trying to hurt Chara as well, and I think we should be looking at a suspension or some penalty for the Canes, because both those plays, while the game wasn't even in question, were pretty blatantly obvious where the intent was.

Except for the times when it isn't.

Dangit Campbell... I thought you were all about being tough on illegal hits to the head -- THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THAT WAS!!!

Love to have a dose of whatever the disciplinary committee is on. must be good stuff.

thing is, you know the NHL is gonna have a huge eye on Game 6 which could definitely affect the potential Game 7. Boston will need to stay disciplined.

47.22 Fines and Suspensions – Instigator in Final Five Minutes of Regulation Time (or Anytime in Overtime) - A player or goalkeeper who is deemed to be the instigator of an altercation in the final five (5) minutes of regulation time or at anytime in overtime, shall automatically be suspended for one game. The Director of Hockey Operations will review every such incident and may rescind the suspension based on a number of criteria. The criteria for the review shall include, but not limited to, the score, previous incidents, etc. The length of suspension will double for each subsequent offense. This suspension shall be served in addition to any other automatic suspensions a player may incur for an accumulation of three or more instigator penalties.

If Campbell wasn't a dicksmack he would have been suspended.

This is unbelievable that there is no suspension here.

Thank you, Campbell.

The Bruins will be playing with an edge now in game 6. Nothing brings out the intensity like being the victim of injustice and seeing a clearly wounded teammate throwing himself into the fire for his team.
